Express Opinions About This Trade Dollar Here - or - My Type Coin is Your Pinata: Take a Swing At It

I finally managed to get a picture of this coin that looks something like it does in hand, so here goes.
This coin could be the "Compromise Coin" poster child. I had a heck of a hunt for an AU Trade dollar I could live with, let alone like, and I wound up with this coin somewhere around a year ago. Despite having been been personally recommended from out of his entire (large) inventory by a well-known and well respected specialist dealer and having been encased in plastic that at least in theory implies freedom from problems, this coin is anything but problem free. Having said that, it was superior in most ways to the rest of the coins I found available for sale in the year I spent looking, and I have left my want list open with several dealers who are very good at ferreting out the nice stuff, but nothing better has shown up yet. One might be correct to say that the toughest coins in the 7070 set in absolute terms are the Classic cent, followed perhaps by the seated dollars, but if a truly problem-free and truly choice AU Trade dollar is what you have your heart set on, the challenge can be formidable. I do not consider myself to have succeeded in the hunt yet.

That's one nice thing about Dansco type set collecting. You can shoot for eye appeal and not worry about whether the coin will get into plastic or not.

i wish it was my pinata as you claim as i'd be happy with it and still miss my 79' or is this a giveaway?
<< <i>do you consider it to be cleaned and retoned? >>
Yup. ANACS didn't think so, but I'm sure of it. It's pretty light & the surfaces are still somewhat prooflike & lustrous, but there is no question it happened. Also, note the punchmark (!) where Lady Liberty's ear ought to be.
Still, it has perfect rims, a great strike, decent surfaces with basically no (other) major marks, and, obviously, an atypically interesting look about it. I liked the coin better than the others, but that's a far cry from saying it's what I was really after. Such a coin just has not been forthcoming.

Here's the photo of a coin, ex-PCGS AU-55, that I purchased from JJ Teaparty for my 7070 set:
The color seems off to me a bit, like you said cleaning and retoning.....
Don't kick it out of the collection for eating crackers however.....

What is your purpose behind naming the dealer the coin came from?
We all have coins in our collections that can be improved either technically or eye appeal.
Circulated Trade Dollars are one of the most difficults coins to find truly problem free and with eye appeal.
I personally like the coin.
My #1 Low Ball Peace Dollar Set
My point was that even with several really good dealers on the case, and going to a recognized national specialist in the area, I was unable to find the coin I really wanted. CCU, it isn't that I was unable to find a problem free original AU Trade dollar -- but I was unable to find a problem free original really choice AU trade dollar with perfect rims, a great strike, a minimum of marks, barely any wear, and anything but really boring dishwater color.
I saw lots of dipped coins. I saw lots of coins with a lot of hits. I saw lots of coins with big hairlines. I saw lots of coins with rim bonks. I saw lots of coins with wear more like what you'd want in an XF45. I saw lots of weakly struck coins. I saw lots of coins that just didn't have any personality at all.
RYK, yours comes closer than most that I saw, although it is lighter and whiter than what I was after. Mine fits better in my set than yours would, despite yours being objectively speaking the better coin.
Anyway, thanks for the conversation. This is not a wholely praiseworthy coin, and I did not play show and tell expecting only "happy talk."
