Opinions on this 1873-CC Trade Dollar

I bought this one raw from a local dealer and I believe it's genuine. What concerns me is the surfaces look like they may have been retoned. There is a faint grayish cast around some of the darker toning that does not look right to me. The dealer did not think it had been messed with, but I'm not too sure. What do you guys think? I paid $450 and can return it at any time. I like the coin, but I'm not sure if PCGS or NGC would holder it.

It looks like a chopmark was filled near Liberty's knee. image

  • At first glance it looks like it has been gone over with a pencil eraser. The coloration in the protected areas of the stars, lettering and eagle just does not look original.....and as mentioned I agree that there does appear to be something that has been worked on or repaired in the area in front of the knee. • the spot by the knee sure looks like a repair. can you get a close up of that area?

Serious rim bruise at 1:00. Don't waste your money trying to get this coin slabbed. Also, agree that the surfaces have been messed with.

  • Looks like it was smoked. Don't dip it, you probably don't want to see what the surfaces look like.

Too many rims bruises for me along with the surfaces.

Here is an enlarged view of the area just in front of the knee. I'm not sure what to make of that.

That 'area' in front of the knee appears to have been 'filled'... shading due to prior cleaning... Cheers, RickO
