I vote that it needs to go to ANACS or SEGS for authentication.

Another vote for fake. Not the type of coin I would buy raw in any event.

I have no idea if the mint mark has the same born-on date as the rest of the coin, but the coin itself looks genuine.

  • Having received a few counterfeits, I learned how to get a quick idea in just a minute's time.

    - Get an exact weight. Check the coinfacts page to compare.

    - Look for the telltale line around the edge--all cast coins will have it to some degree or another.

    - Do a ring test on a smooth, hard surface. Compare it to the sound of a genuine half.

If it passes these checks, you may be 99% sure you have a good coin.

Is it a correct weight for a half dollar, 192 grains, if I remember correctly?

Why guess? Compare the date and the mintmark positions to the known varieties. If it's a perfect match, we can't condemn it from the photo.

I'll answer with another coin being sold by the same seller:
1889-CC Morgan AU-53? No earthly way

Ebay sellers shouldn't be able to get away with ridiculous overgrading just by putting a "?" at the end of their listing title! image

This kind of listing would keep me far away from bidding on the 1870-CC half from the same seller.

I do not know the dies for the half dollars, but it does not appear to be a cast counterfeit to me at all. The stars and obv shield look right for genuine from the dies. No extraneous bumps and pits from a transfer from an imperfect coin (or coins) Could it be an altered coin? Yes. If you know all of the correct date and mint mark positions for the dies used, that should figure it out.

    the seller says....

Satiny fields with silver-gray toning. Superior appearance that heightens the overall strong eye appeal of this scarce issue. BREEN 4954 RARE! KEY DATE! Under 110 1870 CC $.50’s known to EXIST! This elusive date that saw 54,617 examples produced at the CARSON CITY Mint. Take a good look at this collectors item.... Grading of coins is subjective. Certifying companies frequently assign different grades to the same coin. Everyone grades a little differently, so I'll let you do the final grading. Each coin comes in a tamper proof holder. I guarantee that this coin is authentic and that the images below are unaltered digital photographs of the actual coin.

and from a powerseller - worthy of a $5K bid

  • IMO "Questionable Authenticity" certification suggested.
  • I'd like to do a comparison with the known dies, but I would not condemn it out of hand from what I see in the pictures so far. I think that slightly porous Lock is not unusual on the very early CC coins.

Update - - coin sold on ebay for $2,907.57 - - good luck to the buyer.

  • one way would be to study heritage archives for a matching die pair, if one cannot be found, try matching the OBV up to a lesser value such as a P mint, if all that fails, try a post on the seated boards

    Am I way off?

I don't thing this heap is even close to looking right. Heck, it's not even round on the revese. The detail is mushy. Looks like so many other Chinese fakes.

If it's real, I'd miss the boat on it.
