Unopened box auction--box opened 2006-w's

I purchased an "Unopened" box of 99 2006-w Uncirculated Silver American Eagles on ebay.
When I received them, the box had been cut open and resealed with clear cellophane tape.
The seller tells me this is the way the mint does it. They take a box of 100, open it and remove one and reseal it. The enclosed mint invoice did say 99 coins.
Is this correct??

The box in question has paper tape that had been cut and cellophane tape over that to "reseal"it.

Did you not get a good price?
Were you planning on getting First Strike?
I just don't see what difference it makes in the big picture.

He asked if this was correct, not what difference it makes.
I think it only impacts the ability (if there is one) to get the coins certified "First Strike". Other than that, you are probably right, it doesn't really matter.

Deception rings a bell
<< <i>some people like it sealed, that way they are not picked over
BINGO!! YOU WIN!!
One may question my sanity for saying this, but I have 8,500 reasons for expecting the box to be unsearched and unopened as it was purported to be.

And THAT is the best reason of all.........
<< <i>If the mint has prepackaged boxes of 100 it might of just been easier for them to remove one than count out 99 of them. >>
I think that is a plausible explanation, I wish the description had mentioned the pertinent infomation regarding the taping.
I wanted to throw this out there and see what others may know/think.
It may be just as the seller said. The not mentioning it in the auction is what bothers me and makes me wonder.
Another point if someone was trying to defraud you don't you think they would do a better job of making the box look sealed.
PCGS would not accept this. Although if the original invoice is there you might get past some of the receiving guys.
Some had clear, some had paper tape.
It is likely the seller was telling the truth.
How much time had passed between invoice date and receipt of goods? Not a lot of people (I wouldn't) would go through 99 of them to try to get the best one(s) (well, more than 99 to put 99 back in).

Buying a sealed box is risky considering there is no set criteria for what offically sealed is.
You are really only assured of paying for an offical shipping label and bill.
<< <i>No way. The box should come from the mint with brown tape and postage marks all over the box to show it was not tampered with for registered mail. You cannot do this with the plastic tape. >>
Not necessarily so -- I have received many boxes from the mint the past 6 months and there's been a real selection in "packaging". The ones that arrive at the same time as the mint notification email are brown taped. The ones that take 2-4 weeks longer arrived Registered Mail with brown tape and post stamps all ova' the place. Then there's the 06-W ASE box that arrives simply clear taped and no stamps -- but again, mine did not appear to be reopened -- and would not be happy if it did...
<< <i>It may or may not be okay, only the seller really knows. I am like you, the seller should have disclosed it in their auction. If it is a huge issue for you, but you want to keep them, ask for a couple of hundred back from the seller. What was the seller's return policy? >>
No return policy per se, listing did invite questions and emails though.

My concern is how do I know a "sealed box containing ASE sets on Ebay" is original ?
Because the ASE sets were sent in boxes and the boxes were sealed by the clear plastic tape (my friend and I both received boxes as such).
As far as First Strike on individual 2006-W coins, I don't think it was available. Yes for the 20th Anniversary sets but no on the individual coins since they were shipped well after the initial release date.

<< <i>Why don't you contact the mint to see if they are in the practice of cutting open a 100 coin box to remove a coin and then resealing it! >>
Ask the mint that question 4 different times and you are likely to get 5 different answers.
