Weak strike or over dipped 51P Washington?

morgansforevermorgansforever Posts: 8,482 ✭✭✭✭✭
I bought these at a local flea market, a total of 10, all 50's, for $3.00 each.
A local dealer says there over dipped junk.
It looks to me like a weak strike.
The ones for sale in his shop, slabbed by PCGS, look no different.
I think I did alright.

Dipped. Why are you buying coins at a flea market?

I can't ascertain whether it was dipped or not and Washingtons typically have a weak strike. Your dealer may or may not be right but I wouldn't lose any sleep over his opinion. So many local/vest pocket dealers have little more knowledge about such things as an average collector. Usually there demarcation on whether a coin was dipped or not depends if they are the ones selling it.

Worst case scenario, I give them to my nephew, was only $30.

    Ownership subtracts a dipping?

Over dipping a coin can add a grainy appearance to it.

Perhaps it's both. Still, a decent coin for the price.

I'm not an expert, but the reverse is mushy looking, if mushy is even a word.

A strike like that is not unusual for this era.

    So it's at least a 63/64 coin?

  • Over dipping removes luster and creates a dull surface. That coin appears to have a lot of nice luster.

I agree. Over dipping, at least in E-Z-Est (old Jewel Luster), does not diminish the strike but will kill the luster.

What you purchased was simply weak struck coins which is typical.
