Yep, and busting another case of 88 right now. The 88 OPC boxes are very very hard to find, let alone cases. I did great on pulling mint examples of McGwire though. I also got 34 1992 Barry Colla sets on the way. Ill let you know what they grade and then hit you up for a trade. I have a ton of the 88 stars going in as well that Ill keep you posted. I have about 1200 raw cards that are gradeable and waiting, and I keep almost sending in the whole batch, but then I know once I do, a really rare McGwire will pop up for sale on eBay, and Ill have stretched myself thin on funds.
Where are you getting your cases?? The 1988 and 1989 are on eBay right now from Buynbill Collectibles, but they look a little rough. Plus, I don't see paying $80+ to this guy for shipping. I would love to bust a case or two of each...just to "keep up with ya", but I don't want to buy one that has a bunch of beat up boxes in it...
You are right about some of the other stuff, it ain't easy to find. It seems like the oddball rarities that I do find I stumble upon. I got a '96 Donruss Preferred Steel Silver Promo several months back for @ $2. Sent it to PSA and got a 9 on it. Gayle won't put it on the list until (3) of them get graded. Most reports are that (3) may not even exist as the Bronze and Silver Promos were never officially released...But, hey, I did pay $2 for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh yes, I got a silver promo waiting to go out as well! They are SUPER rare. The only other won I saw sold went to mdjdob @ $880, back when he was a force to be reckoned with, 3+ years ago? I was waiting to buy the way-easier-to-find gold promo to send with it. I do this on a lot of cards, as it seems to cut down on wrong flips and improper weights. The silver should be a weight of 10 IMO. The 1989 case I got was pure gold as far as quality. They should pop soon ( I hope). The 88's arent logged in yet. Dont buy a case of 88's. I dont think its worth it. They are impossible to get in good condition. Unlike 1989's, the 88's have plastic wrapping ( hard to open and brutal on the corners), and with gum. Almost all the cards all always warped, no matter who you buy them from, and of course with the gum, you're down to 4 cards a pack.
Here is what The 1996 Leaf Steel Card And 1996 Leaf Steel Card PROMO looks like
They look like twins from the front:
Here is their BackSide!
PROMO all the way.
I was told by some guy YEARS AGO that there are only 20 Promos ever made. The Gold Promos are far more numerous. The SIlver Promos were only given to Leaf Salespeople as Examples of the FIRST STEEL CARDS to ever be made. Topps copied this whack idea a couple of years later. Of course not before Pinnacle had it's say on the All Metal Card Universe:
sorry to flaunt, but I can't help it with this card. Wish PSA would grade it.
Here is ANOTHER Rare Backside Variation that is super tough to find! I mean ebay sellers NEVER describe or scan the back of a card! Here is an example of how Upper Deck sometimes doesn't say everything they inserted. Here are 2 1997 Upper Deck Capture The Flag Mark Mcgwire Inserts!
Now Let us look at the Backs of these two seemingly similar Cards:
Yep, They are different. One is the "Gold Version" It's hard enough finding variations on the front of a card... I picked up the gold card at the LA Hollywood Park Card show two years ago. I looked at it and it just didn't look right. Sure enough when I got back home I found out why!
Let's try another one: This Time we will start from the Back side and flip to the front: Here are 2 Seemingly Similar 1997 SPX Gold Cards:
CRIKEY! Let's See the true nature of these Beasties up close, now!
BLIMEEY! It's not just an Uncommon 1997 SPX Gold Mark Mcgwire... BUT CRIKEY! IT's a rare and endangered 1997 SPX GRAND FINALE! Only 50 ever made! You can See The difference by looking at the Gold Colored Hologram! Crikey Let's see if he Bites...

I think the white back card might just be a print error. I've seen this before, where one color doesn't get printed. Printing errors are strange. If it happens several hundred times to the same card, then it's a listed error and the card is worth alot, but if it only happens once, then it's not worth any more, if not less. Pretty cool oddball card for the McGwire collector though!
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
oh, yeah, ha ha. and for what? Nothing Nothing was added. Oh did the guy think I was being clowneded because of someone's opinion about the mcgwire variations I put up? Beckett acknowledges the Variations. The white backed card is the regular card and the Gold backed one is the variation. So basically, I'm right and the other posters are wrong. Which is typical since most people here don't know Anything about 1990's inserts anyways. I would have expected a better answer Jeffcbay, since you are a player set pro.
