Pointless, but possibly interesting challenge!

JoeLewisJoeLewis Posts: 1,911 ✭✭✭✭
I decided today that I am going to manually wear down a new presidential dollar until I get it to a P01. I don't know how long this will take, but I'm gonna just start rubbing it between my index finger and thumb until it "makes the grade."

Anyone else want to take the challenge and produce a P01 presidential dollar?

Soon you will have a blister on your thumb.....
  • Sounds like you might rub your finger down to the bone first..ha. Might be an interesting challenge though, I'll try. See if you can get the lettering on the side worn down as well! John

sounds like the long way to making a po1 with your hands on technique.
personally i,d opt for harsher methods like brillo pads or sandpaper.
even a rock tumbler with lots of goodies in it to help make your grade.
    rocks,sand,nails,glass,etc..
  • to be quite honest ive been doing this exact thing since feb. 15th, seeing how long it will take....everyday i rub on it for about an hour or so (not a consecutive hour) and so far i havent seen much of a change in it. No more luster and some hairlines but nothing too dramatic.
  • Have yet to see one! But your plan sounds good--I'd probaby take it down with a grinder first and then wear it to PO1. Will save you about 10years.

Just don't try and get it graded. They might body bag it for indexing or thumbing. image

If you keep it in your pocket in between rubs I would bet you could do it in 3-5 years. It would be cool to build a presidential set registry in P01
  • I think it would wear down pretty quickly if you kept it on your pocket with keys and other coins every day. You know, a regular pocket piece.

Wow, this might take a very long time! I can't see myself sticking with it for ten years. I'll carry it around in my pocket with my keys and continue to wear it down manually. We'll see.

  • If you have rough, dry hands, it may only take 5-7 years.

So..does the Mint think thay will last for 10?

Make sure it goes through every load of clothes being washed.

My SAE has went through 15-20 times by now, wearing nicely.
WTB: Eric Plunk cards, jersey (signed or unsigned), and autographs. Basically anything related to him

Positive BST: WhiteThunder (x2), Ajaan, onefasttalon, mirabela, Wizard1, cucamongacoin, mccardguy1

    Negative BST: NONE!
  • With the condition I have seen these coins come out the roll, hell it shouldn't take too long to wear it down.

    They look pathetic so far.
  • If you were to wash it with your clothes... wouldnt it be bb'd as cleaned?

At one time I carried a SAE and an Ike around, often I would take them out and rotate them against one another... I did that for a few months... There was little to no damage (I was trying to wear down the SAE)... I'm not even sure what happened to them at the moment.

I remember going into a flea market and saw this guy selling this metal polishing stuff and he said, "Pull a coin out of your pocket" telling me he would shine up the coin... I pulled the SAE from my pocket, you should have seen his eyes pop open...

So he takes the SAE and runs his polish over and does a half ass job at shinning it... After he hads it back he says, "I'll trade you" (He had a shinned up IKE on the table) I guess he figured I would trade the 1 dollar polished IKE (That looked fake at this point it was polished so much) for the SAE that wasn't that shinny...

I said, "I don't think so" and gave him a look like, YOUR AN ASS! I then walked away.

You should have seen his sh!t eating grin as he said it, like a damn kid in a candy store that wanted the piece of candy I picked up.

  • I carried a Sac dollar as a pocket piece from when they first came out for a period of two years. After two years the grade was down to XF-45.
