How about a grade on this 1913-D Type 1 Buffalo nickel

This just arrived, and darned if I can find any distractions. My guess is MS65 with no struggle to get there. The luster is really something and the strike is good even by 13-D T1 standards. I'm very pleased with this coin!

Guy .. that Buff is fantastic...superb detail on the buffalo's cape, hair detail is very very good. No real visible dings or wear of any magnitude.
That could easily (IMO) go 66.... Very nice... I am envious. Cheers, RickO

Thank you, Rick. As you know, I kiss frogs as well as princes, and it is gratifying when a coin arrives that is nicer than advertised. I have one certified already, NGC MS64, and this one is nicer. It certainly appears to be a good value for $68, and do think I will send it in.

I agree. What could possibly keep it out of a 67 holder? I don't see a tick on it. Take this with a big grain of salt though. Grading MS Buffs is definitely not my strong suit.

There is a small discoloration under the bison's chin that is more than shadow. Very small and not in a prime focal area. So the coin isn't flawless. But it's close.

  • I say 67...it has all of the requirements, but PCGS would probably call it a 66...they are tough on these high end Buffalos...Absolutely beautiful!!!

I'd say 66 on a not so good day, or 67 on a good day. Send it in to coincide with the new moon.

  • Depending on the luster, I'd say 66.

The prevalence of 13-P T-1 Buffs in mint state would lead one to believe that the Philly coin is the choice for a type set.

The Denver issue is one of the best struck branch mint coins in the series. The amount of dies it took to maintain that quality was the portent of all the lighter-struck and much less deatiled coins to follow in the ensuing years.

I like the D for a type coin.

Yours is hammered. If I was to give it a neg it would be the slighly lightly struck top feather on Iron Tail.

It would most likely garner a 66.

Pete, I agree with you on your type-coin opinion! The 13-D is definitely overlooked that way, probably the result of the stigma of the Denver mint. The best type coins in the series in my opinion are the 13-P T1, 13-D T1 and 1915-P and a hammered 1916-P.
