Help A Fellow Numistmatist Out

As some people can attest to, I am cheap. Not cheap to be cheap, I just want my 2 kids to get a better education than I got so they can buy any coins they want when they get older and own thier own succesful business. What I want help with is the fact that even when my kids are gone, I still won't have enough money of my own to own two certain kinds Mint Marked coins. I need a Charlotte and a Dahlonega Mint Mark and my fear is they will be of course more expensive and probably harder to find. What I propose here is a challenge. A challenge like no other. I want to get these coins or one of them for $90. HOW you ask, a ladder of friendly assistance by fellow board members who may be willing to help out. I am not asking for charity here (Who would give away a C or D MM gold piece for $90 anyways), but rather a win-win situation for everyone involved. I will start out with my prized coin. I am so poor, the most I ever spent on a coin was $90, SAD I know. The coin is a 1909 VDB slabbed by ICG MS-66 RD. What I want is a trade up. So anyone with a $100 dulplicate coin would trade me and whatever that coin might be I will trade someone else for a $125 coin and then trade that one for a $150 coin and so on and so on until I have a coin or set that I could trade someone for the gold Charlotte or Dahlonega or both, depending. You need not have paid the dollar amount that the trade up is worth, so if anyone is interested in the 1909 VDB ICG MS-66 RD for thier own collection and has a dupe 1909-S Lincoln or what-ever and would consider a straight up trade, I could reasonably achieve a very nice coin, without anyone going too far out of thier way. I think it would work, but not everyone would want to do this I understand. But I know there are a lot of good people here who have nice dupes and big hearts that might, so I figured why not give it a shot. We can keep the post running and everyone can keep track of where we are and people could decide that maybe they might like the next coin and could part with one they paid a song for years ago to get that coin. I think it would be very interesting to see if this would work or not. And if nobody is interested, at least I tried. I would also be very interested in returning the favor to the other people who might do this if it works. Please give a minute and consider it, you would help a fellow hobbiest and perhaps yourself as well. Thanks for considering this event! John

I can't afford Gold coins either, so I don't collect them. I have to stick with the lowly modern dime.
But a radical thought came to me, why not save a little each payday until you can buy your Gold coin/s.
    Dan
  • I don't collect gold coins either. I just would like a coin from each of the Mints throughout history, and unfortunatly the only way to obtain a Charlotte or Dahlonega minted coin is to get it in gold form. And perhaps I should have clarified, this is not a nilly-willy quest for a quick buck. I mean no offense to anyone here that hasn't a lot of money to spend on coins, as I myself am not wealthy by any strech of the means. I am an average joe with a below average income and a mortgage and kids just like most of you. What I was hoping for here was a neat way to obtain the coins I will never probably get to see within my own limits and make it fun for a whole bunch of us. There a guys here with big hearts and big wallets and they won't care if they "Lose" a couple bucks because it is neat and they already have 30 of these coins and dupes of some as well. I don't want a rare date gold coin, or an ounce of gold for bullion. I just wanted a couple coins with a neat history and an unusual mint locale. These coins will be cherished by me and handed down to my kids to enjoy as well. I should have been more specific and I apologize. If there is no interest, please don't feel obligated to participate. And I cannot believe somebody did this to get a house with a paper clip either. WOW. John

I would be able to read these long posts if you would learn how to begin a new paragraph. This may sound harsh, but I could not get through it.

  • image So I get a $90 ICG MS66 1909 VDB for a $100 1888 Bass pedigree PCGS MS64 toned Morgan and we are both happy? (just an example but might actually work) Or whatever? Is that how this works? and then you get a $110+ coin from someone else for the Bass and so on until you get C and D gold coins which you pass on to your children? I'm not adverse to the idea and not trying to be a jerk---just trying to understand the concept.

Edit: And yes--paragraphs are cool, and, yes, there a number of people here with big hearts, who often help other collectors (I do regularly in a small way)--but you've got to be able to communicate with them. Somehow, as I ponder your request, helping you obtain C and D gold pieces, which a lot of us big hearts don't have ourselves, is a bit of a reach.

Well, for $10 more than your $90 coin, you could have had a 3pc 20th Annv SAE set. Right now, those are going for $300+.
That would have been a good trade up. Pay for grading, get a PR70 (or 2) and that would have been another $400-$1000.

Or, pay $20 each for the 2006-W coins as singles...each is $60-$100 now, so 4 of those would have been $240-$400.

THAT would have been a way to do it quick and easy image

  • I am SOOO Sorry for even attempting this. I though it would be something neat, but never realized it would become a science experiment to be picked apart by everyone who thinks it's dumb. I apologize and the quest is done for. Thanks to those of you who PM'd with an honest invitation to help, but I don't need everyone putting something negative in the mix every 10 minutes either. IF YOU DON"T WANT TO PARTICIPATE, DON"T POST!! Hard concept for some of you?

And here is your paragraph. I can't imagine someone could not read a post without a paragraph, but still have enough "energy" to post something on the same thread! Whew, glad you made it out alive there!

Happy hunting to all of you and just let this one die! Sounds like the best thing for everyone here huh? Don't want to put anyone out or anything, seeings how you all line up with tongues wagging when someone offers a free coin in one of thier posts! Why don't all of you go get second jobs, intead of panting for free coins from fellow board members.

Again, I appreciate those who had a sincere interest in helping me out and too bad there is enough people with bad attitudes to ruin something that might have been fun and interesting to try.

    One question-

Wouldn't saving $10.00 a week x 52 week ($520) x couple of years be a more rewarding way to acquire that gold coin you are after?

Relying on others to open the wallet for a non essential item in life ..well I just don't know.
  • roadrunnerroadrunner Posts: 28,310 ✭✭✭✭✭
Coins don't work that way. At some point the trade will work just opposite. What you think is a $100 coin, being traded for a $110 coin, may not work. That $110 coin could be a piece of dirt worth $75. And you'll start over again. Just the way the hobby works in reality. It's just as easy (and safer for all) to ask every forum member for $10 and send it along. In no time you'll have a few thousand dollars.

I've never owned a CC or D gold coin either. And I'll continue to live satisfactorily with that knowledge.

Actually, I think the better lesson here is that if one does not want to receive any comments or criticisms that may be construed as negative then that person should not start a thread.

I just finished uo a trade with a fellow PCGS and Seated board member. After the 3 months we spent working on it we settled on 7 coins for 4. I would say cash is easier than trading coins. Buy a coin for $100 sell it for $110. Buy one for $110 sell it for $125 and so on.
I seldom check PM's but do check emails often jason@seated.org

Buying great coins - monster eye appeal only.
  • start salting away some cash each week, or work a part time job for a few months to get some extra cash...or sell some of your junk thats accumulated around the house on ebay for some seed money.
  • i never waited in line for anything free, ive had to work for what i have. if its free i dont even want it. YOU may try getting a FIRST job and taking up the suggestion of saving your money for what you want. i second Tom B's opinion.
  • I have a job, and I have had a second job before, so you can zip your job hunting thoughts. Secondly, I have worked for everything I own believe it or not. Thirdly, I was not aware that by posting a thread it meant it was time for every jerk with an oppinion to reply. Can you read something, not agree and move on? Is that far beyond your control do that? I think these boards are a great place to meet and get usefull information. I have come here for several years and never once have I been rude or derogatory to someone in thier thread. It's called manners and just because your parents didn't raise you with any, it doesn't mean you are excused.

It seems most of you want to be spitefull and rude even when it is not warrented. I thought it would be neat to try and yes, I knew there would be skeptics and people who thought I was a scammer. I apologize once again for even bringing this up and will seek assistance elsewhere. Thanks again to all who replied with a POSITIVE comment or thought and even offers and those that might not have agreed with my idea that simply moved on or were nice enough not to participate and say "Good Luck" to you.

Those are the people this board were made for, not skeptics and mean-spirited people. I don't have a large collection and will probably never see one. I am happy collecting what I can afford and will remain so. Just wanted to try something new and exciting and for those that cannot see that, then I know the world is darker place for some than it is for me.

Happy hunting and hope some of you can find something better in life than bashing people and being synical.

what an ingenious way to keep one's thread at the top of page 1.

maybe I should list my for sale items within your thread?image
  • I am looking for a low grade example, any example, as long as you can tell that there is a "C" and/or "D"Mint Mark. And no special date, just the cheapest most "common" in any of the series. I don't want a particular series or date or grade or anything, just want a coin from every mint. I have a cheap CC dime, a cheap O Barber dime, a Cheap S Lincoln, a cheap D Mercury dime and a cheap Philly Nickel, along with the "W" Proof Eagle I got from the Mint a few years ago. No way to get the "C" or "D" without spending what my family would call a small fortune on, so I thought I would turn to some people who I know are good friendly people first.

I did not want nor do I want a handout from anyone, just thought this would be a neat interesting quest for everyone who WANTED to get involved. Can't really blame anyone for NOT wanting to do this, just thought that it might work out that other collectors might have gotten a $200 valued coin for $8.00 in a bargin bin 10 years ago and they have since upgraded or whatever.

It was suppose to be fun, not a problematic endeavor full of ill-will and snotty comments. I said what I said about bullion, etc. to simply state this was not an investment opportunity for myself, and I think everyone I have dealt with on these boards can attest I am NOT a coin dealer, nor do I have anything remarkable in my collection. I just wanted to try this and see what the response was, and I got IT alright!

I guess I should have known better in a world of scams and cheats always looking for a quick buck, but thought maybe here was different. I knew problems might arrise, but figured we could work through them and if it worked out, someone else could do the same and I would be happy help in any way I could.

A holed, nicked, ugly beast of a Charlotte or Dahlonega would suffice for my set. I guess I can't imagine someone did this with a paper clip to get a house and actually did it, seeing how people here are treating a similar challenge. Makes me wonder I guess.
    Johnathan German
  • I don't think this was considered an equal challenge as going to a house starting with a paper clip.
It's just amazing how a person could trade up to such an extreme. Which makes anything possible. image

The only thing ruining this project is your decision not to go forward. If you have honest offers to help you get started, what else do you need?

Realize that the ball is in your court and begin the journey, or admit that you're giving up because someone hurt your feelings.

Personally, I would rather force jagged objects through my skin than ask anyone for anything, especially non-essentials.

That's why I starved, scrimped and did what I had to to get ahead... School, job experience, etc., so one day I could afford more for me and my family.

That being said, it's an interesting concept. Don't know if I would have launched it through a general appeal... Good luck, though.
  • A guy did it from a paperclip to a house, and everyone thought it was a hit... and the owner of the house actually contacted him... it was a small town in canada. They were all willing to help the guy.

A guy tries to do it with YOUR stuff, and you get all pissy? The deal can work for both sides. Just because something isnt worth as much... doesnt mean you dont need it, or want it. I have done it periodically with car parts. I got over $1500 worth of parts for less then $800. He wrecked the car he bought them for, and told me if I purchased X, X, and X I could have it all.
