Send to PCGS in unopened mint packaging?

Not a first strike issue at all, but a valuable coin(1 oz shiny metal), is there any real advantage of sending it in without looking first....I really would rather look at it. Would opening the box(sealed packaging) affect the potential grade ?, I don't think it would/should but being a newbie at sending in coins ...what do I know ? Of course I would not mess with the capsule or anything like that.

    I think you are mistaken about this UNOPENED packaging. You say it's not for "FIRST STRIKE", so you can open it. There is no problem looking at your coins before shipping them out for grading. In actuality, most coins are to be removed from their original packaging and put into a flip prior to shipping to PCGS. The only time you might send it in unseen is for that "FS" (first strike) designation.

    I always open the package and look before I send them in. You never know what you get from the mint. If it doesn't look good, why grade it??? image

    I think you need to send them unopened for the 20th Anniv designation where applicable as well.

    I've sent First Strikes in flips before...within the 30 day period...and received the First Strikes. The only time I've sent a sealed package was for the 20th Ann...

    I got one of those nice shieny coins from the mint last year that had a fingerprint on it. Returned the Silver proof set to the mint for a replacment. It sure would of never graded at any of the services. So unless you need the unopned package as proof of something that may or may not be true, allways check your items when recieved from the mint or any other seller.

    I remember someone said if sending in proof sets, it was ok to send in the entire set as long as all were to be graded. Can you do that?

    Welcome to the boards! "Labels" refers to getting your coin graded with any special insert like "First Strike" or "20th Anniversary" with the idea to collect more money for your coins. The principle of the label itself is to mark a coin as being graded early after its release (in the case of First Strikes) or being produce for a special occasion as in the "20th Anniversary". "Flippers" are people that buy a coin because they think it will be profitable short term. "Flippers" will sell a coin quickly without letting its value mature as they are looking for a quick buck. That's been Wikipedia 101!!! image

    what is it SAE, GAE, If 20th Ann Dont open it if you want 20th Ann on the proof or you will not get it. image

    I get it, but there is no shame in sending in an unopened proof set to get graded as long as I plan to keep them for at least a few years or so?
