What's a good book to buy for the new Buffalo Nickel collector?

I think there are some recent releases of books in this arean, right?

    I just bought this one:

    Buff Book
    Always took candy from strangers
Didn't wanna get me no trade
Never want to be like papa
Working for the boss every night and day

The book Longacre recommended is a good one. Also, David Lange's The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels 3rd edition just came out. If you plan to get into the many varieties of Buffaloes such as 3 1/2 legs and 2 feathers and similar, you will want to buy Ron Pope's Buffalo Nickels The Abraded Die Varieties.

For complete disclosure purposes, I have no financial interest in any of these books.

Hands down David Lange's book is the best. In fact, it's one of the best numismatic books I've ever read. There are additional details one can glean from other sources, but as a guidebook, it's just the sort of reference a new or even a seasoned collector will enjoy.

  • I'm thinking of purchasing David Lange's The Complete Guide to buffalo Nickels. I was planning on going for the 2nd ed since its cheaper and can get used books. But is there a big difference between the 2nd and 3rd editions?

There is IMO virtually no difference between the 2nd and 3rd editions. Had I known this, I wouldn't have bought the 3rd ed. because I already have the 2nd ed. If you want to buy the 2nd ed. feel free to PM me with an offer for mine (near-new condition).

David Lange's Buffalo nickel book 3rd ed is the first book I would buy, and you may not need to go any further. His Lincoln cent and Mercury dime books are superb also. I have a factory sealed David Lange's Buffalo nickel 2nd addition if any one else is intersted, just PM me.
