Bob, that's a sweet Gehrig. I'm not too familiar with the baseball issues of the 20's strip cards but I've learned a decent amount about the boxing versions. Much of what I've seen as far as cards that were "cut" up back in the day is Authentic grade, at best. Most of these strip cards were sent to candy stores and were supposed to be cut into singles and distributed to kids one-at-a-time style. Needless to say, many of the "cuts" leave much to be desired. In fact, in many cases it appears the cards were literally torn apart by hand.
Much of what I've seen slabbed high-grade has been recently cut from a discovered previously uncut strip of cards. While the uncut strips are rare, tehy don't appear to be as rare as you would think. In my travels (keeping in mind that I buy boxing) I've picked up 5 uncut strips so far and usually they run between $40-80 each, depending on the set and how rare they are. I'm sure baseball versions go for more but since many of these sets were "All sports" the pop. # for them is probably around the same.
From what I can tell, the high grade baseball singles in the ebay stores are pretty overpriced but if they're put to auction they do quite well for themselves. I think as time goes by and more and more people start clipping the uncut sheets to make gradeable copies of singles we'll see the singles dip down a bit temporarily while the uncut strips move up. In the long run, a 1928 PSA 9 Mint Gehrig is still a 1928 PSA 9 Mint Gehrig and the demand will clearly always be there for them. I consider the strip cards to be just as worthy of a release as more mainstream sets in my Dempsey Master set so I don't see why that Gehrig should be treated any differently. That is one BEAUTIFUL card.
Golfcollector, I read the thread about that set of yours, fascinating. That seems like one of those stories that you hear second- or third-hand and think the person telling you is BSing you with a fish tale. That Morris is absolutely amazing. Were you ever able to upgrade any of the cards from your initial Cope's set?
A couple of my current favourites. Picked up the Smith a couple weeks back, and the Sullivan is on it's way. I'm thinking of sending them into get graded, but it's going to cost plenty with insurance and courier fees to and from Australia !
(the John L card isn't the actual card I am getting - I haven't uploaded that to the website yet so i just found this pic)
I have had a couple articles in the SMR over the past couple of years on golf cards. Yes I have upgraded a few of the Copes cards, but always looking to unearth another big find!
The holders do make me a bit nervous, and some of the more recent cards I have had graded from that set are in a differrent holder configuration that seems to protect them better

GC, you clearly know what you're doing so don't take this the wrong way but if that were my Morris I would walk it into PSA for a reholder and never let it leave my sight. I trust PSA completely but that is like the Honus Wagner of golfing cards. I really can't thank you enough for sharing the pic.

HAHAHAHA
Nice! I wish it was worth Wagner type of money. I really don't look at my cards all that much, matter of fact, I have a 60 drawer libarary card catalouge that houses all of my golf cards. The PSA slabs fit very nicely in them if you angle them just slightly.
I may end up taking this (and some other that are similar in the "iffy holder" ) to either sportsfest of the National this year if I can make it. I would definately want to walk these directly to the PSA folks.
Lets just say when I sent in about 85 Copes golfers to get graded....never was I so worried in a package getting to PSA....That is a LOT of value of stuff heading to them via Fed Ex.

Here are my two. One SGC and one PSA. I hope these show up. I'm terrible at this. I wanted the pics to show in my reply instead of an attcahment but I'm not smart enough to figure it out. Oh well.
to post images right click on the image (option click if you're on a mac) and then select "copy image address" then start a post as usual, and select the picture frame on the tool bar just above where you type. This will open a window where you paste the image address you just copied. Even easier than it sounds. Nice cards ToneD!

when did you get that 32 Caramel Klein? Those cards are almost impossible to find these days and when they show up on ebay, they are bid out of sight. Great card! And, ToneD, great cards.

I got the 32 Caramel Klein in May on EBAY. I had been looking for some time. I was outbid a few months before and I guess I got carried away this time!! It is one of my favorite cards though!!
I don't think the price you paid for the Klein was high- it was considerably less than similarly graded US Caramels of Frisch, Terry, and Lazzeri, and only a couple of hundred more than Maranville. I'm sure you could get well over what you paid for it today.

I just tried out (VCP). That was my Klein and Lajoie listed (I did not pay the price listed for Lajoie, original buyer backed out so he paid the difference). VCP seems like it will be well worth the investment for future research!! Thanks.
I was the last bid before the "renegger". They called me a day later and said that the winner couldn't pay. I was able to buy the card for what was my last bid. I guess it could be how you look at it. The seller did get the full price (it supposedly came from 2 sources). Now I don't know if they really received the $$ from the renegger. Maybe REA covered the difference (they were going to press charges if he didn't pay his share). I believe it was around $1000 difference.
I saw this same card in the Sotheby's auction in similar condition go for much more (almost double) about one year earlier. I wish these cards could be graded instead of just "AUTH".
As for the card sold in the Goodwin auction in June for around $3k, I believe that was a card offered to me by the individual owner in April. It was in terrible condition (I've attached a scan). He said if I didn't buy it he was sending it to auction.
Are you the gentleman based in Connecticut....? Just wondering if you are the person to whom I traded one of my special Knabe cards about a year or so ago. If so -- welcome to these boards, as I haven't historically seen you here. Hope all is going well your way.
Marc
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
Marc, I am from CT, but not the guy who you traded with. I've been collecting for 1 1/2 years. I collect HOF RC cards (or as close as I can get to RC). I'm new to the message board (I've been reading for months, but just decided to jump in!!).

It has realized prices going back over a year, and yours was the only Klein 7 to have sold publicly.
edited to add- it's got the price on the Lajoie too
