Long-Term Coin Storage questions...HELP!!!

Can anyone tell me if storing slabbed coins in double protection Intercept shield boxes protect coins from buidlup of humidity in safe deposit boxes?

I have many coins stored in these boxes along with a 40 gm silca dessicant container which builds up humidity VERY fast (possibly weeks).

Not sure what I should do except for getting a MUCH larger silca container (i.e. 700 gm container).

Any ideas what I should do?

About all you can do beyond this is to store everything in a tuperware container. If your coins still begin to spot or turn, there really wasn't much you could do in the first place.

Or you could put the coins into glass jars or metal cans with airtight lids with dessicant inside before placing them in the box.

If you are storing your coins in a safe deposit box, placing your coins and the dessicant in a food safe zip lock bag (non-PVC) should be adequate.

1. Does anyone know which brand zip lock bags are PVC free?

2. Also, and no one answered my original question, are double protection Intercept Shield Boxes protective against humidity when stored in safe deposit boxes?

I would think that if a dessicant can't keep up with the humidity, a double protected Intercept shield isn't going to do much. The absorption of the silca should greatly out-weight that of the Intercept Shield.

All food ziplocks are PVC-free, as PVC isn't safe to consume.

I was thinking those vacuum packing freezer thingies they sell at Costco and elsewhere might not be a bad thing for really long term storage. The problem with an ordinare container is the air inside invariably has some moisture content and it has nowhere to go. Depending on how high that content is, inside the closed container might not be better than leaving them outside of it. Can put dessicant inside as others have suggested. I think, though, the sealed vacuum would represent a more stable environment. Just needs to be renewed if opened.

Depending on where you keep your coins... a 'GoldenRod' accessory would help. Many firearms collectors use them in a safe... provides very low level heat to drive out humidity. That and a dessicant should prove adequate (depending on where you live anyway). Cheers, RickO

4 years in ,and my coins are as fresh as the day they were vacuum packed , the only problem is that you can only see one side of the coin as the back of the bag is not see-thru. I have also packed mint boxes and sometimes the vacuum will round off the corners of the box. For those sticklers that want pristine boxes I would advise packing the coins separately.

Enter "humidity expert" in the seach field in this forum to see the answers I got for asking a very similar question. I don't think anybody really knows what to do about this problem. Guess the only answer is to not keep the coins long enough to have to worry about it.

All zip lock bags are PVC free. They are manufactured using polyethylene and polypropylene.

These do not protect against humidity. They only protect against corrosive gases of which H2O is not considered to be (although you could certainly make a case as such).
