Asd discussed elsewhere, I am embarking on a 26 coin seated type set. Here is the first coin to make it in:

    Robert,

I remember you talking about the set that you came up with. Could you expound on the guidelines for the set and what criteria you are holding yourself to regarding originality, color, grade etc.?

I love the idea of breaking out of the mold and making a set that fits ones own budget and taste. The NGC and new PCGS registry both allow for a customizable (non competitive) registry set to be built as well. I love it.

Here are the components for my type set:

    Half dimes: Five

    No Stars
    No drapery
    Drapery
    Arrows
    Legend

    Dimes: Six

    No Stars
    No drapery
    Drapery
    Arrows (1853-5)
    Legend
    Arrows (1873-4)

    Twenty cent: One

    Quarters: Six

    No drapery
    Drapery
    Arrows and Rays
    Arrows, No Rays
    With Motto
    Arrows/With Motto

    Halves: Six

    No drapery
    Drapery
    Arrows and Rays
    Arrows, No Rays
    With Motto
    Arrows/With Motto

    Dollars: Two (or three)

    No Motto
    With Motto
    Trade dollar (optional)
    Gobrecht (optional)

I will be seeking MS coins with some color and some flash, but not necessarily a lot of color. Originality, or the original look, is of paramount importance. The coins will grade 63-66 or so. I expect the seated dollars to be in the lower end of that grade range. I would like all four mints to be represented (P, S, CC, and O), but I expect most coins will be Philly mint. Taht's pretty much it.

I have completed the set you enumerated but not nearly to the standards you are setting. Mine are all original, probelm-free, ranging from F to XF.

Hey, let's leave the Gobrecht's out of this. Really. This is an everyman's type set. Just about anyone could complete it in XF. Add the Gobs and you have eliminated many potential collectors from it.

An Everyman's type set in EF, perhaps; an Everyman's type set in the MS grade range you have chosen, not a chance. Therefore, bone up and include the Gobrecht!

Well, sure - except the Gobrechts are the coins that started the whole seated liberty design. If you're gonna do a type set, do it right! [or at least add it to the list as optional].

ps - now the even worse news: there's two distinct types of Gobrechts released into circulation. Stars reverse, no stars obverse and stars obverse, no stars reverse. For a truly complete type set, both should be required.

True. I'm about as everyman as they come, and I'm in favor of that being an optional type. It's probably more fitting in this set than the Trade Dollar, IMO. The Trade Dollar's obverse design was based on the old British pennies going back to at least the late 1700s.

Robert - I'd stick with the Half Dimes. Not many people collect them and you can get attractive coins of this denomination for less $ than the others.

Seems to me that in the LIBERTY SEATED coins Christian Gobrecht's design was modified by Hughes, Sully and others. So, In my humble opinion the series is set apart by others as Liberty Seated coins much like the modifications to the Peace dollar were taken down flat etc after 1921. Gobrechts' Flying Eagle is a beautiful coin, but so out of reach $$ wise to many. It's in a class of it's own.

Okay, okay, I made the Gobrecht optional, but spare me the Gobrecht types! For me personally, it would be a matter of finding one that is acceptable and in my price range. I doubt that the condition would be in line with the rest of the set. As a collector, I am more inclined to classify the Gobrecht as a pattern though many clearly did circulate. It's somewhat of a gray area.

When I conceived the seated type set as listed, my thought was to allow nearly anyone to participate and not be intimidated by the amount that completing the set would cost. I think that having a Gobrecht as a required coin would turn some folks away.

Don't forget the 1859 half dime, the Gobrecht one. I really feel that this is clearly separate type.
Sounds like a set I'm doing. Save the original looking ones for me.

Good luck on the no drapery 25c and 50c....very challenging. Most of the lower range "mint state" pieces on these 2 are problem pieces of one kind or another. One of the biggest problems is that they tend not to be UNC. Finding an original, attractive, and really UNC MS61-63 of either will be a chore. The quarter is out there it will just take looking at a bunch to find one. The price on the half is well up there too besides being difficult to find. Even an honest MS62 half will run a pretty penny. And one decent 62 I saw sell a couple of years ago brought around $7000, and then was upgraded into a 64 ($40,000+ price tag).
