Coin collectors are, as a group, cheapskates. If I want to know a price in greysheet, I drop a few bucks and download the lastest edition.

I just spent $14 for a complete set, the last batch I ordered I used for about two years, until the precious metals market made them hopelessly obsolete.

And to answer the OP's questions, I don't mind, in fact I was happy that I might finally be able to help.

I'm cheap cheap. The free PCGS price guide is what I use... along with ebay's "completed auctions" feature.

I've done it a few times lately, as the last time I dropped $14 for the package was nearly a year ago. What's the big deal? If you don't want to be bothered, I can respect that -- just don't reply.

I tend to think this attitude stems from the time when not just anyone could get the sheet. If you weren't a dealer, you had to be some dealer's special pet to get the "inside" price guide. I remember when my dad finally made it into the coveted inner circle of people who could get last month's greysheet, around 1980 ...

It's no different than if someone asks if you have the phone book. Don't want to spend the time? OK, no problem.

No--if I ever have information that will help someone here I'm happy to provide it from whatever source How much trouble is it to look up a price and say "your X is $X ask? Or do an attribution from Overton when possible. Don't be petty. That said--I think everyone should subscribe and have their own resources! But I'll always share information if I have it!

That's what I thought about them, "for dealers only". It's news to me that they can be downloaded. I'll probably download it now fairly regular so I can keep track of coin values for insurance purposes. Thanks for mentioning the downloads!

Lots of collectors don't have a need for regular use which means a subscription is not cost effective. I don't mind responding to a polite request.

tomcattom, tell them "when they ask what time it is?" where the nearest clock is. This is what I do.

Why would a greysheet request be a big deal? If someone asks me I tell them. I mean many times people pay way over sheet for coins so what'? I mean right?

Not really. If someone trying to sell me a coin asks me this question, I will happily oblige them. I always carry around a few sheets from 1997.

These sheets are genuine and in mint condition so I don't want any lectures from anyone.

Not really. Does it bother the folks at CDN when people give out a price here and there? Probably not. Same with pops on a particular date and grade. But it is the business of the owners of that intellectual property.

What does bother me is when people ask what VAM a Morgan dollar is and then bail out when they get the answer only to use it to list their coin on eBay, with no apparent interest whatsoever other than adding value to their lot. It is always a fun exercise and I (and others) don't mind doing it generally. However, more than a couple times it has gone virtually thankless and our value adding knowledge has added value for some ungrateful individuals. Don't want to discourage people form asking, just being polite about it and perhaps direct in their intentions.

I don't subscribe to it because I very rarely need it, but if I did I'm pretty sure I know how I'd feel. For an individual who very rarely needs a particular Greysheet quote on one or two items, I'd have no problem giving it to them. I think that small amount of shared information would qualify as "fair use" under the law.

If an individual posted again and again, week after week, asking for Greysheet quotes, *then* I'd say "buy your own damn subscription."

I like to tell them the wrong time

Them: "Excuse me sir, what time is it? I need to be somewhere by 5pm"
Me: "Not a worry, it is only 2:30pm right now, plenty of time" (really 4:45pm)

I help when I can, though I just bought my first grey sheet last week. I really have no need only because I am selling most of my morgan DMPLs. No price movement in 2 years so there outta here.

Coins that you are selling are worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I agree with an earlier post that the completed auctions on ebay is a great and cheap indicator.
