A friend has a nice GSA CC Morgan.....

ElcontadorElcontador Posts: 7,740 ✭✭✭✭✭
She showed it to me last month. It's an 82 CC that has nice eye appeal and clean surfaces. Am guessing it would grade 5 or 6. If I can, I'll bring it to a show to get someone else's opinion on it.

But in terms of value, should we send it to NGC to get an in holder grade? I'm hesitant to crack the coin out of the GSA holder. Your thoughts?

It seems to me that folks who break 'em out of the GSA holders are confident of '66 or higher. Fact is if I had 'em graded I'd do it in the GSA holder. Lends some historic authenticity to the coin and the plastic is Gov't issued and not the TPG slabbed tombs. General rule: don't play the crackout game with GSA CC Morgan plastic.

NGC will holder the coin right in the GSA holder. At 65 or 66, I would advise doing this. If it were a common 60-63, there is no reason to send it in. Heres an example off eBay. LINK
    Hope it helps.

Elcontador, I happen to like them in their original GSA case, and not graded by NGC. I say this because I don't like the band they put on it and makes it look too commercial. But like you I'm a ol' grumpy collector. If you decide it's value is more graded by NGC in the GSA plastic I'd do just that and not crack it and send to PCGS. Once it's like that it's really just another Morgan IMO. Hopefully you have the box and card with it. If not, let me know as I have a box and dated card I'll send you. Yes, for free.image

I also very much dislike they way they look with NGC grading bands around them. High grade CCs in the GSA holders (MS65 and up) are becoming very scarce, since so many have been broken out over the years. I'd leave it alone just the way it is.
    When in doubt, don't.
