1955-56 Parkhurst hockey has grey backs and tan backs, very much like 1956 topps baseball. For some reason, tan backed cards printed on the bottom row of the 11 row sheet of this 79 card set do not seem to exist. Harry Lumley, Rocket Richard, King Clancy, and Toe Blake are all in that row.
I found by chance a Rocket Richard, which is the only known copy of a tan backed Rocket Richard for this set. Looks like it was hand cut from a strip, but it is the only proof any of the above mentioned cards exist in tan backs.
Good questions - remember it from before; it kind of makes me think of trying to prove a negative or something like that?
I have something kind of in that category.
For the past 20 yrs or so, I've been working with Tim Wiles who was the director of research at the HOF on finding variations to the sheet music.
It's "believed" that - perhaps - the great singer who recorded for Edison - Edward Meeker may have been one of the singers on the sheet music.
To date, I have 29 variations (the HOF thought there was 11 at one point till I started updating that number) - the "Meeker sheet" may have been made in a small print run and all were lost.
If I ever find one? You guys will be the first to know!!!

Despite there being a spot for the card in the album (lower right, above), I don’t believe the card exists and may never have been produced, for a variety of reasons, the biggest reason being there is a card - Gabby Hartnett - that has no spot in the album but clearly does exist. And it has an incorrect back (that of Bill Dickey), making it an error, too, and likely the last minute replacement for the scrapped Bluege card…
PS - For the record, every complete album I’ve ever seen has had the Gabby Hartnett card in Oswald Bluege’s spot.
groaning Oh no they didn't try to pull that same stunt they did with 1933 Goudey did they? You know, leave out one card on purpose to get people buying more and more packs to find the missing one? I'm honestly surprised word was able to get around back then enough where people caught them and called Goudey out on their stunt and they had to issue the missing Napoleon Lajoie card.
there are some lost treasures surrounding the 1998 pinnacle bankruptcy.
There was a second series of the Donruss Crusades parallel produced, but only a few ever actually made it to market, and those that did were backdoored. it is possible the rest were destroyed. They were to be released in series 2 product, but pinnacle went out of business first. Sadly, there are not even images of all the cards.
The 1997 pinnacle certified mirror blacks are also a mysterious set. it was to be a parallel of the 150 card set. all numbered to 1/1. it was however not fully released. I dont believe anyone knows why not. To date, I believe only 30 of the 150 cards are known to exist.

Oh yes I remember reading about those at the time! Some at the time thought it might have been a "stealth insert" (unannounced; meant to be a surprise), like how in 1994 Donruss they secretly seeded 100 packs of the complete set of Elites! Imagine getting a surprise like that!! Of course the Internet was in its infancy at the time so you couldn't just Google/Yahoo search for pics of these cards or find them on Ebay or something so it was like this mythical mysterious sort of thing! Boy was the pre-Internet world so very very very different...
I've always been curious what was destroyed in natural disasters. The Maui fire was one recent tragic event. There have also been some in California that were quick and destructive.

I am sure quite a few. I would also imagine the number lost to personal house fires, plumbing problems, lost and destroyed in the mail etc. is much higher than we would imagine.
You said lost films so I'll kill two birds with one stone. I'm a Jack Dempsey collector and at the height of his popularity, around 1923, he went out to Hollywood and starred in a few serials. The first was Daredevil Jack and the second was Fight & Win, both with only small portions known to exist, being kept at UCLA. I have, however, found original production stills from many (if not all) of the episodes so they make for a great Dempsey collectible and a great film collectible as well.

While they are available in low supply, I would say any HOF’er from any Venezuela Topps set. High grade is nearly impossible.
This ain't about no "high grade is nearly impossible", no sir. We're talking about finding any copies AT ALL. That being said, I wonder why Topps chose Venezuela of all places? I mean all the cards do at least still exist right?

Ok, find me a PSA 10 Mantle or a PSA 9 Mantle. Target or Walmart has them, right? They don’t exist.
