1997 $5 Jackie Robinson Commem Hmmm
Just surfin Ebay. Notice A 1997 $5 Jackie Robinson commem. Well, more than noticed... Thinking on the subject I came up with a few questions. Just answers I don't have. Out of roughly 5200 minted buisness strike, how many are really out there still lurking? Or rephrased how many are accounted for? I don't have access to pop reports, so how many have been submitted for grading? How many were popped out for albums, books etc? How many are stuck away far from view, not forgotten, just not seen? Been 10 years since release, where's Jackie?

PCGS has certified 459 of them (413 in MS69, 14 in MS70).
That leaves 4,394 out there somewhere, unaccounted for!
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

One of the problems with the '06 W plat uncs is they do not have a wide dispersal and fewer hands hold them. The jackies are probably spread much more thinly and in non-collector hands.
BTW, I got an unc. in mint plastic from Paul Sims (!?!?) in '97 for 170 so was happy with that purchase.
Well, just Love coins, period.
For that reason there are probably a fair number of Uncirculated Jackie Robinson $5 gold coins sitting in singe boxes and most especially in the 4 coin velvet box sets. I collect the box sets, but only the wooden ones, which takes the 4 coin set off the table for me. A wooden box Jackie Robinson set was issued, but it contained a Proof $5 gold along with a pin, patch and baseball card.
BTW you see a lot of 4 coin sets offered on Ebay.
This may give the Jackies and other bits some push. I agree about the encapsulations though - they are offputting and not reproducible when subjected to micrograding.
Well, just Love coins, period.

Maybe but not quite. Look at this Mount rushmore $5 gold I picked up on ebay. The seller refunded me the difference between what I paid and melt. Neither of us could figure out what the green gunk is.
