A poor man's 18/17-D Buffalo?

A while back I acid dated this coin (don't worry- it was completely dateless), something looked funny about the "8" in the date afterwards-looked flat topped, so I treated the whole coin. I later looked at some genuine overdates at a nearby dealer (he had several very nice high grade). The flat top "8" and barely visible traces of the downward leg were what I noticed in his coins. I think I see them in this coin that I treated (flat top and traces of 7 in the loops), anyways it has filled the whole in my Dansco Buffalo book. Here are some photos:

Did you use nic-a-date or some other acid? The date came through quite well.

A dealer I've known forever bought four Nic-a-Dated 1918/17-D nickels from a collector who went through thousands of dateless buffaloes. ANACS net-graded them "Good details net AG" and he wound up getting $350-400 apiece for them. This same collector found two 1916 DDOs, those can be attributed without restoring the date by the strongly doubled feathers.

Very cool find... and interesting technique... sounds as if it may take a bit of practice though. Cheers, RickO

Used nic-a-date, once just on date area of coin-thats when I noticed the "8" looked a little difference, so I retreated the entire obverse with the stuff. It makes a great hole filler in the Dansco buffalo album I have-never could understand why they put a slot for it in there. Have kept a look out on the dateless coins I see for the doubled feathers to identify a 16 double die as well. Now someday to fill the hole for the 37-D 3 leg ...
