Poll - Platinum Proof Collectors/Investors/"Haters"

I've added a poll here so that I can see in graphic form where our forum members stand on the platinum eagle issue. Feel free to add comments if you wish. I'm just curious how many collect the proofs because they like them, because they're trying to make money on them, or just don't like them at all.

I do not own any because their market value is up right now......buy low sell high.....I like to purchace items when they are not on a market high, I'm always looking to buy them in a declining market.

Its hard to condition yourself to buy in a declining market but what it boils down to is would you rather pay 1000 bucks for something or woulf you rather pay 800 ???

Just my humble opinion in the for what its worth catagory........

I both collect them and purchase extras for investment in order to offset the cost of the ones I collect. They are beautiful COINS with arguably the most intriguing designs ever offered by the mint. Just the fact alone that the reverses change every year make this a unique opportunity.

Do you define "hater" as anyone who is indifferent toward them and thus doesn't own any?

They are fine, and I like the differing designs. And in general, I like threads about collecting and appreciating modern crap (i.e. cladking's always insightful posts).

But the redundant bullion threads about "what I can flip them for" or "my Mint order status changed from reserved to shipped" are tiring. And stop calling the small gold bullion coins "fractional gold"!!

I happen to like the designs on the proofs! I think that the mint has been recylcing too many old designs on newer coins (gold eagles, silver eagles, San Fran gold & silver reverse, buffalo gold & silver, etc, etc, etc...) so I especially like the new and changing reverse. The designs on the "Vistas of Liberty" sub-series are especially attractive.

Having said that, I also like them because of their very low mintages - especially the $50 series of proofs. Hopefully, I can finish them before the collector base grows too large and drives the prices up. I have almost completed a full run of them and have absolutely no intention of selling them.

Collecting low mintage, modern coins, with high precious metal content,

At issue price, is a no brainer. Limited downside , potential blowout

    to the upside.

I have no issue with them, but don't collect them due to price. What drives me nuts is how many 'commerce' threads are started about these coins! I love learning about coins, but not seeing 200 threads discussing the merits of flipping plats for fun and profit! The boards are about coin collecting, not bullion sales! Most of the threads seem to revolve around selling these. One or two threads would be normal... but it seems a bit overbearing on the site these days.
    Just my .02.

In all fairness, I suppose my response is about high end bullion (the gold sets, etc) in general more than the plats in specific.

Toned Buff, you are being very civil about all that, and I really think you're a class act. But gawrsh, it's kinda exciting.

I'm sure it really is exciting for the people who deal in this. I wish there was a dealers forum where the entire intent would be to discuss markets, prices, selling techniques, etc.
Heck, I'd even go there and read some threads!
But I'd still prefer to see more threads with pics of coins, discussions on quality, collecting hints and tips, etc!

They don't do a thing for me, but hate them.....kinda silly to think that. Every one should collect what they enjoy. Now is there too much traffic on here about them, probably.

Added another "No" response for those who are indifferent to them. I'm in that camp myself. They're nice looking, but too expensive (for me) in anything other than a 1/10th oz which is kind of small.

I started this poll to get the "gist" of what people are thinking on here. I've read some of a couple of other threads and sometimes it seems as if the same thing is said over and over again. There are obviously some strong opinions on this subject on this board.

I agree that I'd like to see more numismatic posts on here, and, to make up for this thread, will post one shortly.

I've collected the proofs from the outset because I think they're gorgeous. The obverse is imaginative and symbolic in the way ol' Miss Liberty use to be, and the reverses have seen some the the most creative Mint efforts in years and years and years.

I'd collected the MS plats from the beginning, too, but more from my habit of getting one of everything the Mint cranks out. They're not as exciting, so I sold them earlier this year to buy some Washingtons.

You are a very wise Bear......................its a no brainer when you add in the changing designs like the 50 states quarters.

    410,

We are in the right place. Its very exciting to be able to collect such cool and very rare design based coins in set form now as they come out. AND we are able to buy them as we move into what may be the design based collecting ERA. Plus there is almost always something to watch out for or look forward to. Its cool to see the new design come out each year. I have been collecting coins since 1980 and I have never collected anything this entertaining.

Even I am somewhat suprised to see the silent collectors outnumber the vocal "haters". This sometimes happens when one side of a debate is very vocal. The other side quietly ignores them. --Jerry

If it wasn't for the different reverse design every year I doubt I would collect them. I think I started collecting them around 2003 and I sure wish that I got the 2004 at issue price.

2006 will , I believe turn out to have been

a hallmark year. There were more coins and sets,

of enormous potential, minted in 2006 than any other

year in recent memory. Thanks to this Forum, many members

were made aware of the beauty and possibilities of these many

issues. This sure made up for a lot of coin losses over the years, for

    a lot of us dunderheads.

It just struck me about how fast the proof platinum commem collector base is growing. Two years ago there were a few post about the 04 before they closed and almost no one would so much as respond mostly because very few were buying them for ANY reason. Now there are 30 collectors posted in one day and 20 more that buy for investment and or collecting reasons. I buy one for my collection every year but after that its potential only for duplicates.

If this trend continues it will not take long for these coins pathetic little mintages to bump up against collector demand. The window of opportunity is still open on these wonderful type series sets but that may not be so in 5 years.

For those who can afford it and would like to have a set eventually....... lock up an 2004 and 2005 in your denomination of choice soon. BUT don't buy a whole bunch of them....leave some for others. ;-)

I agree with Eric, the window of opportunity on the eariler issues of the proof plats won't last for very long. I think that the 10th Anniv sets will draw additional attention to these and the available supply will soon dry up. I am not sure that there is even 5 years left before we see increasing demand that drives prices up. I need an 02 proof $50 and then I'll have everything from 01-06. The 1997-2000 can wait a "little bit longer."

I don't like the platinum coins at all. The metal has a very limited history as numismatic material. In the U.S. series it is limited to three pattern half dollars that were made in 1815 (I could off on the date, but I'm close.)

All these things are is something for the mint to sell. The only time I had one for sale, it was from a customer who wanted to liquidate it so that he could by something else. No one would even look at it when I put it out in my case at the shows. I finally sold it to bullion dealer at slightly below spot and took no commission on the piece.

To steal a phrase from 1930’s movie theater owner, these platinum coins are “box office poison” so far as I’m concerned.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I dont think they are poison...They look great and its interesting to have a 100 dollar coin..I guess time will tell how they perform..But a pretty proof 69 at close to the metal content..tough to beat..I am not much of a modern collector but its hard to ignore the performance and the wide demand for these type coins.

Bruce is a consummate and highly respected collector, very, very sharp and a very nice guy. He has had many top notch reg. sets and is mentioned at least three times in the PCGS Hall of Fame for his collections. Check this out: WOW!
ps. I feel remiss that this is mentioned in a "poll" thread, as Bruce really deserves an entire thread dedicated to his many profound and significant accomplishments.

I need another option -- "I would collect them if I could afford them".

Technically, I *do* collect them -- it's just that my current collection is the null set.
