Hypothetical: Are you a shill if...

...let's say you are bidding on an eBay item and you win it. Let's say there is an identical item up for bid a day or too later and it's getting down to the wire and the item is going to be won for much less than what you won for an identical item. You don't need it because you've already got it but the temptation gets the best of you. "If I can't have it for $XXX.xx amount than nobody can have it for less than that amount". So, you bid up the price on the new auction. Are you a shill bidder? You don't really want the item you're just gambling that you can run up the bid so that the next successful goober pays more than you did for that item. You don't know the seller and don't really care what the thing sells for as long it's more than what you bought it for. Are you still a shill bidder?

If you're going to pay for the item if you win, then no.

No. In this case you are not a shill bidder. If you bid with intentions to pay the motive behind the bid doesnt matter.

Imho, if you are willing to pay for the item, and a "friend" isn't asking you to run it up (it is just out of spite that you are doing it), then, no, you aren't a shill.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

The practice is quite common. Many sellers do it to
protect the perceived market-value of their own
    inventory.

As long as the bidder does not know the seller -
and plans to pay for the win - it is certainly not
shill bidding, as EBAY's TOS defines the same.

No collusion, so I don't see that it's shilling. It's naughty, though. image

No, you are not a shill; you are a bidder on that lot and will be buying it if you are the high bidder. The successful goober could be you.

If you are the high bidder and you pay for the item you are not shill bidding......In my eyes you are a market maker, you are setting the market price at a certian level......It happens all the time especially with the very large coin companys, another example would be spot prices......

not a shill, just protecting your market position and backing it up with willingness to pay.

I will bid on certain coins I don't REALLY want, but wouldn't mind having if the price stays low. I see this more as trying to be smart about potential profits if I flip it. It is like going to a garage sale and seeing something that you don't really need but you buy it anyway because the price is so low. So no, it is not shill bidding if you intend to pay for it.

The bottom line in this and other situations, IMO, is this:

If (a) you have no prearranged deals with the seller to prop up their prices, AND (b) you fully intend to honor the bids you've entered, then you aren't a shill.

It's no different than putting in a low-ball bid on a buddy's auction. If you don't have any "helper agreements" in place and you would buy the item if you're the high bidder, you're not shilling.

Having said that, in this case, even if you would buy this coin AND the other with your high bids, you are being kind of a jerk even if not a shill.

Such great feedback! image I thought I'd save the best for last! image

But I did catch the "d;ck" and "jerk" comments from a few buyers. I know sellers probably love this sort of thing. I was just curious if I was the only jerk out there running up bids like a shill. I can't say as I do it too often, becasue a couple of times I've had to eat my "Market making" bid prices.

Anyway, thanks for the comments both sellers and buyers. image
