Slowly, around the edges with a pair of horizontal cutting pliers reguluarly know as dikes, but on the horizontal and you might call them nippers. Or in a vise until the sides crack never force the plastic off by pulling on it you can scratch the coin. Now, the following is not my idea, but you can place the coin in a electric radial arm saw mitre box or chop saw box and you can do it safely. You cut the edges off and then lift the plastic off. Now, don't you guys go crazy on that one, but it does work. The smell of the plastic is enough to kill you if you ask me, so I don't do it. I like cracking the coin holder and only if need be, such as, to place them in other set holders. Be careful............Regards, Michael
"What good are the labels once you crack out your coins? When you sell your coins, do you think anyone will believe you when you claim the labels belong to your coins? "
I don't think I'll be selling - if I do sell, I will just send them in for re-sub. If they bodybag, or come back lower, that's a risk I will just have to take.
I could also buy a raw MS whatever and lose monsy on the sale as well. Coin pricing is based on opinion anyway - the dealer says it's a nice coin, I say it's not as nice as all that, etc.
If I were to buy a 50k slab, I'd probably not break it - unless I needed to fill a hole.
As to how to break the slab, I use 2 pair of vise grips, and I crunch off the edge all of the way around.
"Do you also guarantee that it will not body bag or come back in a lower grade if the new owner wants to get it reslabbed?"
No guarantees. Coin is sold "as is." Buy it from me and do with it as you please. The scariest part for me would be the cracking. I don't like "dings from dropping" on my coins.
I've cracked a number for my type set--most recently two NGCs (an AU58 20 cent and an AU58 3 cent)--This is the set I will always have--even after I sell everything else--it will be the collection I keep till they put me in the ground or scatter me over the gulf (my preference). A plastic type set just doesn't make sense to me!
