It's official! I brought a new collector into the fold.
Yesterday, at the Aurora coin show, I met up with a coworker that had just the slightest interest in U.S. coinage and he followed up on my urging to go to the show. Beforehand, I had given him an older Red Book (1992, but it still has plenty of good information and just the prices are meaningless), a year set holder, a collector's guide from Heritage, the Numismatic News price guide, and an Odd Type Set Capital Plastics holder (with no coins, of course). I thought that Odd Type Set holder was a bit of a white elephant since that's not the simplest or cheapest thing to fill. Occasionally, I'll give him my Coin World paper, but he doesn't want to be inundated with them. I could bury him in periodicals!
Well, he intended to get at least one coin for that set at the show.
We looked at quite a few coins. I showed him what to look for in various types, especially for obvious problems and cleaning. I explained that in time, he'll understand what that "right look" is for a coin that hasn't been messed with. With my help, he picked up a couple of cheap Buffalo Nickels and an 1866 2¢ VF+.
Now he has a start on the holder! He was very happy. I just have to turn him on to forums like these and other books to really get his interest fired up.
