Wow, cases sound expensive. He has made another great investment.image Not only has he gotten over on collectors, he is sticking it to his fellow dealers. I thought there was a code?

Does anybody have a picture of "Levi"? I'm very curious. For some reason, I'm picturing a 60-something version of 'comic book guy' from The Simpsons.
  • You know I have had two or three dealings with the guy. First off, he was rather rude on the phone and would only give me about 15% of SMR on one occasion. I understand turn around time and that he needs to move inventory but that kinda hurt. I just don't deal with the "cat" as he is wise in his own ways. I tried to talk a little more with him when I came home from Iraq and he was still pretty rude. After the year I had I would have kicked his tail....edited, but he is a jerk and I can deal with that. I gotta give him some credit, he has a nice sight and in the card world he is at the top but overall as a person.......don't care for him a bit.......

You're not far off. But he is younger than that.

And he gave me a GREAT deal on my 1990 Topps NNOF PSA 8 Frank Thomas.............. image

Maybe he just does it for advertising

Good point. He's gotten more air time than probably any other seller on these boards, with the possible exception of Mr. Mint. No doubt he's gotten a few orders that way.

Are you kidding? Wow! image Maybe he is a tightwad after all! >>

Not a big picture, and I don't know how to put it in the post, but here's one:

    Levi
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

In my 20 years of vintage collecting, I've found Levi to be
the most knowledgeable dealer I've done business with.
Also, contrary to a few other posts, he pays strong prices if
he need's something for his collection or inventory. I've sold him a few cards at shows for 2-3x's SMR. Obviously these were lower pop or tough cards, but still he paid more than any other dealer offers I've had on the items.

My only complaint would be he doesn't carry much in Football. If he did, I'm sure I could fill all my wantlists from the 1950's and 1960's sets I'm working on in one afternoon.

I've always found Levi very friendly too. Plus he has
the firmest handshake in the business, unlike some other dealers who give you their wet, pansy, not happy to be talking to you in person grip.

That's all well & good, but not accepting $200 for a $205 purchase like ripublicanmass described is just flat out greedy, IMO.

I have bought several cards from Levi and Jim and maybe paid 110-120% of what I could have bought it for on eBay. The cards typically arrive the next day, and the dealings are always very smooth. I can see how others won't buy from him however. The cards I buy are not high dollar, but if Levi has a card that you cannot afford you can put it on layaway. He is easy to deal with, and I will continue to buy from them.

If he charges more than you would want to pay - don't buy it. Pretty much the case with everything.

I still like the name Levi Bleam. It's cool.

I'm thinking of renaming my cat Levi Bleam Baboo.

  • I bought from Levi once--a T206 Mike Donlin. Paid SMR for it. Sent the payment late and tossed in a few extra bucks for the trouble of being slow. Levi sent the extra cash back. He also taught me how to pack PSA cards when you ship them. The guy takes great pride in his cards, whether for his own collection or sending them out to you.

    No compaints from me...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

A lot of the "old time" dealers are the same way. My father dealt a lot with Levi back in the 80s to early 90's and he has always had good stuff over the years albeit overpriced. This post makes me chuckle as my 71 year old father is the same way. He would rather give a card or coin away than give $10 on it for fear that he might have been had. With cases of unopened material in his basement and thousands of autographed photos, we know we're gonna need a really BIG casket when his time comes!! He still runs his shop but rarely sells any cards anymore because he just doesn't care if he sells them. I laugh because he recently told me about a nice lot of 55's he bought where...describing them over the phone, I'm thinking all 7's and 8's. Koufax, Aaron, Clemente, etc. He brings em' down couple weeks later and shows them to me and there may be...I repeat...MAY be 1 or 2 cards that would be 6's. Best hope is 4-5's on them. And because he never really got into the PSA stuff, he doesn't understand that an oc qualifier kills a a card. Think he's still looking for about 90% of book on a 71 Topps Mays we got graded that came back 8oc about 4 years ago! Then, I had picked up some really sharp 36 Diamond Stars and got back several PSA 8's that should have brought well over SMR and he gives on those....go figure. Anyhow, my thought is that I'd much rather sell a card 5 times in a month and make a $1 each time than wait 12 months to sell the card to make the same $5.

I couldn't have said it better. If the prices are too high, move
    on to the next seller.

<< <i>Then why offer to sell it to Levi at "book" price? As I mentioned in a previous post, a card of this value ought to be consigned to a major auction house anyway, unless the seller believes the bidding may not exceed book value. If not, why not put it up for auction to make 50K then? >>

I would have asked him (knowing he has the clients) to sell it for me for 7% of the value which = a pretty nice profit for both? If he said no thanks off to the next dealer. Its not like he is the only dealer with clients?

It is funny that everytime there is a fifteen cent listing day on ebay, there is a new thread about how Levi is overpriced. It is true though. His prices are much higher than most other dealers, but as others have said, you do not have to buy from him if his prices are too high. I never buy from Levi these days. I just wish he doesn't ruin the ebay searches by littering ebay with the same overpriced cards every few months.

I have had nothing but good experiences with him. buy high end examples as in midgrade with perfect centering. I did and I'm happy.
