opinions sought: Original seated quarter?

Holdered by one of the big three as XF45, the obverse certainly looks crusty enough, but does the 'clean' centeral reverse give one pause? Also does XF45 seem accurate:

It's a far cry from "original" but was deemed "passable". Not a difficult date to find a better example of.
  • Nice, but my first impression is dipped/cleaned, and retoned. The reverse just does not seem right, as you point out.

    Cleaned and retoned.

Looks like "soap and watered a long time ago, retoned mostly naturally looking"
I'd call it 40 not 45 but that's quibbling. Nice enough coin if it complements your type set

It does not look original. But it may just be dipped, which seems to be acceptable for Morgans, only. The XF45 seems reasonable.
  • over-dipped, then put in a folder and retoned over many years

It's been dipped and has since retoned, but it's not a MS example so I wouldn't really worry about it.

If you like it, buy it. But as others have pointed out, there are likely better examples to be had.

The central reverse gives away the old light "market acceptable cleaning." Though a one year type coin, 1853 A&R is the most common date in the seated quarter series. Breen used to mention how he saw them in change even into the 1940's (or later).

Prior to this becoming a heralded "1-year type coin" in the later 1970's, this date commanded little respect. There's no shortage of decent coins to pick from.

I don't like the reverse rims---the toning should not occur like that in my opinon.

  • Awful looking and not close to original. You should not be buying raw coins.

My, we are quick to insult one another aren't we. The OP says it is in a TPG holder. So much for that!

I agree with the first part of this reply, though. That coin is not very nice. Between the reverse rims and some speckly stuff on the obverse, I am also a little bit concerned about maybe some environmental damage -- micropitting, that kind of thing -- maybe what gave someone occasion to clean it in the first place.

I would hold out for a better one. XF is a good value grade for that coin. $150 and some looking ought to land you an excellent example.
