Your opinions will help determine what I do with this 1891 Morgan

I need some opinions before I can decide what to do with this coin...

What looks like marks on the neck and cheek are actually shadows being cast from the lighting and scratches on the slab.

Maybe PCGS would just reholder it for a small nominal fee at a show for you.

Crack it out and spend it at the store image

From that pic, looks like it may have been a heavily toned coin at one time and dipped.

Don't do anything with it, IMO.

Don't clean it, don't dip it, don't slab it. It's fine as is.

It's already slabbed. I am more interested in grade opinions. I believe it to be a upgrade candidate

I'd take a stab at it, based on your images and explanation, and say it would catch a 64. The strike looks a bit weak. If there is any chance of some rub missed the first time around, I would definitely not advise cracking it out and risk a 58.

From your question, I assume it is in a 64 slab, which is where I think it would max out at after numerous submission attempts. It would not reach a 65, PCGS is so strict with condition rarities, and it has hits that would limit it to a 63/64, in my opinion.
Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

What he said. No way it goes 65, sorry...I've tried with better ones and gotten nowhere. They have to be perfect.

Based on the image, looks like a 64.

If the slabbed grade is 63, probably worth an upgrade shot if you have full cartwheel luster. If the luster is less than full, it will probably stay 63 (don't crack, or you risk a 58).

I don't think that would have any chance of getting a 65....

Everytime I see a scratched up slab, I try to imagine what the coin would look like if it had not been prtected by the plastic. I am not the biggest fan of slabs in the hobby but to realize their benefits in many ways, this one included.

    If it's a 63 now I'd take a shot at 64. If it's a 64 I think a shot at 65 is hopeless.

Either way I wouldn't remove the originality of the coin by dipping it; I'd send it in as a regrade in the holder.
    When in doubt, don't.

Looks like a 63 to me ... could just be the pic.

If it's 63 or under - crack out and resubmit (she looks like she belongs in a 64 holder)

If it's a 64 you may consider submitting thru a regrade submission but i don't think she'll go 65. PCGS is very picky handing out 65's for this date....basically it needs to look like a 66 to get in a 65 holder.

Even if you don't get the upgrade at least you'll get a new holder minus the scratch.

I agreee--if it is currently in a 64 slab leave it alone. If in a 63--leave it alone--probably won't go 64 next time.
    Curmudgeon in waiting!
