List Your Thoughts and Observations on the 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle

I returned to Coin Collecting in 1999, due to the State Quarter program. The 1995 coin issues were released a few years before then. For those who were active in collecting in 1995, please fill in all us late-comers. What was the feeling about the 95-W Silver Eagle back then?

I see in my 2000 Red Book that the value was listed as $650.00. The 2007 Red Book lists it at $5,100.00.

I couldn't afford the mint's offering the 4 coin gold set + the W. So I thought I'd have a chance at the silver once dealers started selling them. I looked in Coinage and recall seeing prices in the $400 range after only a few weeks, and thought 'you could buy the gold 1 oz. for less--this is just bogus hype.' I flirted with buying one for a while and thought I might pull the trigger a couple weeks later and all the dealers were asking $600. That took me out.

When it broke the $1000 barier, many dealers said they'd sell there, but wouldn't touch it, because it could drop like a stone. When it broke $2000 just a few years ago my local dealer laughed and said that the '95 W and the MS '97 Jackie Robinson he could get, but wouldn't dare keep them in inventory saying 'Too risky.' I couldn't afford it anyway.

And now that they've continued to soar, while my coin budget has expanded, the price is so far out of reach I can only dream about it. Yeh, that and the '07 Ultra High Relief St. Gaudens are my two fantasy coins. While I may not ever own one, there are plenty of other interesting coins pursue.

    Good luck with your pursuit!
    HAPPY COLLECTING!!!

I look at the price of the 95-W Proof Silver Eagle and the mintage of 30,125 and all I can do is image

Now I can also look at the 1 ounce 2006-W BU Platinum Eagle with its mintage of 2,500 and revel in my luck at getting in on the ground floor. When I see all the slams being made about "junk bullion, etc", I think to myself, isn't the 95-W Silver also a bullion coin? All I can do is imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage

I'm thinking to myself, those that don't have em are slammin em. Those that do have em will see the same climb to the heavens. All it will take is time. Sell them or hold them, the choice is yours.

    1 oz of Silver ( spot $12.59 ) mintage 30,125

    1 oz of Platinum ( spot $1,124 ) mintage 2,500

I purchased mine on a downturn in the stock market. Seller owned it as investment but needed cash to cover some 'shorts'. Have been amazed at my good fortune - purchase price vs. increase - and continue to enjoy the coin. Silver eagles may be modern crap, but they have a very strong collector following... thereby support for the price, even at it's present level. Dealers have told me they have steady demand.

Oh yes.... I also believe that this coin will hit the $10K mark... in five to seven years. Cheers, RickO

This is a thought-provoking post for me. I still have the set I bought from the mint back then. Sending that check in was tough! But in the back of my mind I thought it might be something special because of that SAE. I bought another set in 1996 from a friend in need of cash, I paid him $1000 for it and put it with the other.
It wasn't until about 2003 and I was subscribing to CW again that I realized what these were worth! That one was quickly sold for $3100.
It took awhile for the market to catch onto that one. It seems no one really realized how low that mintage was! I actually didn't know until I read that CW!

What's more interesting to me is the 1989 Proof Silver Maple Leaf. Here's a coin with a mintage of 29,999 that sells for about $45. The Silver American Eagle sells for $4500. Wow.

I completed my ASE Proof registry set at the end of 2004 and gladly bought the W for $2800.00. Glad I did, if I waited, I probably wouldn't pay to own one for what its worth now.
  • The US Mint played a "trick" on the Proof Eagle collectors. If you were fortunate to have ..deep..pockets then you have the whole set. Those who did not purchase the gold set with the SAE ...well....image.........
