Ever stumble into greatness?

Stumble into greatness (stuhm-buhl in-too greyt-nus) v. 1. To acquire a really good coin sort of by accident, when by all rights the coin probably should have ended up with some specialist or big shot.

  • Nope. I unfortunately have spent most of my collecting life stumbling into mediocrity... medichruty... mediawch.... averageness.image

All the really nice coins I have I have paid what i would consider full price for. I do like the stories of others who have though. Then I can live vicariously through them.

I think once in a lifetime still beats the average by, um, one.

I often feel like I'm stumbling through life, so if one day I stumble into greatness it shouldn't be too much of a surprise.

Of course, if I stumble off a cliff I shouldn't be too surpised either... it'd probably occur while I'm checking my pocket change for something great, naturally.

Baley I just read the whole thread from your discovery coin and WOW! Has any other coins been discovered? Do you still own the coin?

    Again Congratulations!

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

    CCU,

I've been "stumbling through" my hoard of wheat pennies for two days now. No "greatness," not even a solid "mediocrity" ( see Vega 1 note ) The term "common date" has taken on a whole new reality for me.image

Depends what you mean by greatness.

I stumble on coins which I think are great (both for condition and cost) by being patient.
I've picked up numerous coins where I would have expected none with that date &/or MM to be.

Example would be a recent 1795 Half I just picked up for almost nothing compared w/ it's respected value.

I had come across what I believe now to have been a 69FB 1939-D dime back in the early eighties, but unfortunatly , I did not know what I had at that time and sold it to buy a used car. I have not seen a better looking mercurcy dime then or since. And that was around 25 years ago. I wish I new where it ended up.

I purchesed a nice looking 1966 Kennedy half dollar at a local coin shop for $4.50. Sent it into PCGS expecting a MS65 maybe MS66. It came back MS67. PCGS price guide says $2700. I dont know about greatness, more like a winning lottery ticket.
