<< <i>LOL When i first read what jerry said this morning I had a good laff.

I would assume that the clubs base it on 40 man roster.

not on the signing of a player that may have brought them over the top.

Thats right Steve. But you know ..... whatever fits the bill at the moment image

    << <i>40% on top of $16M is not $30M, it is $22.4M. >>

    I stand corrected.

Dan, why is this bogus? The Yanks have to pay the luxury tax, they are the only team in baseball that does, and it's a fact. Not that it matters much, it's not my money or yours - but it's funny that they have to pay so much for mediocrity.

Steve, I don't understand your post. Are you implying that Pettite is going to put "the Yanks over the top"? If so, you need to lay off the spiked egg nog, brother.

Boston has made the deals this off-season, while the Yanks have essentially done nothing. We'll see the results of this soon enough.

    Ha!

Yanks have made moves for nothing but pitching all off-season. The "have done nothing" comment could not be more un-true.

The Red Sox????? Have picked up another huge flop in J.D Drew, a suspect at best infielder, and a possible disaster in "D-Mat". Yeah, they have made all the moves

I may be a Yankees fan but I'll be objective here....and also by listening to a couple of huge Bosox fans I work with...

The moves have been a HORRIBLE risk. Yes, maybe it will pan out for them...MAYBE. The guys at work arent blind to the whole Damon thing either. They feel Damon was well deserving of what they Yanks are giving him and wish the Red Sox still had him instead of being a Yankee and especially giving this ridiculous money to JD Drew instead of Damon. Damon was a big part of them getting to the WS and said all Bosox fans should feel slighted because essentially, you are giving more money for Drew in place of Damon.
Let's not forget that broken down, spaghetti arm Damon had the best season last year. Now, as a Yankees fan, I am happy to have Damon over Drew! And for less money and fewer years!!!

Again, D-Mat looks like he has the stuff...but is already overpriced. And I think most Yankees fans would feel the same way if they Yankees had won the bid. Facts are facts...the dude hasnt pitched to MLB hitters. He also had an overused arm for his age. Is he a higher risk for injury? Could be. Guess we will just have to wait and see.

Oh, and I *almost* feel bad that the Bosox will only have 8 men on defense this year...cuz Im not sure if you can count Lugo as a player on the field when it comes to that! image We will enjoy Lugo as the Bosox SS as much as, if not more, than Red Sox fans!

No Jerry that is not what i meant. please re read the post. it was in regards to your bogus comment on how the pettite signing was the reason for the luxury tax. by over the top, i meant that his salary was the reason it went over, and if so it has no more bearing on the tax then the other 39 guys on the roster.

Now as for Pettite bringing them over the top and winning, that is possible but not what i meant.

    Pass the egg nog.

    Steve

    Good for you.

yeah winning the division every year is mediocre. where do you come up with this stuff? do you really expect anyone to believe that?

    lol

    More egg nog please!

Then, you misunderstood my post - I never meant that Pettite put them over the cap for the tax, they were there already. Anyone they sign, be it Pettite, or anybody - they have to pay luxury tax on that player's deal. It's not because of the Pettite deal. And, by mediocrity, I meant $22M+ for Pettite, who will struggle to keep his ERA under 5.00 back in the AL. Mark it down.

Let me add something to this - it seems the Yankees actually have to pay 40% luxury tax on top of the $16M they gave to Pettite. So, what this means is, they are paying $30M for one season of pitching. And, in all liklihood, an over 5.00 ERA. Amazing.

hmmm really? you said: " So, what this means is, they are paying 30 m for one season of pitching". certainly that implied that the cost for pettite was the 30 m. no?

Nah I did not misunderstand you at all.

What i said was that luxuary tax should be based on the 40 man roster not one guy.

And FWIW I was not the only person that 'misunderstood' <eyeroll> you.
