1885 o Morgan, to slab or not to slab.....what do you think this might grade?

not a key date, appears readily in UNC, but I wonder if this guy is worth slabbing ?
my investment is a c-note.. this is the cleanest face morgan Ive ever owned (I dont own many high grade morgans).

Fine luster to this coin not captures in my ever crappy images... carwheels under the light, fairly white so probable dippage ? no sign of any cleaning even though my image in making it look platinum-y

anyone want to venture an opinion ?

Looks like a 64 to me. I wouldn't as the economics for it don't really support the cost doing so. It's too common with ask of $50.

The first set of images makes me think MS64-65. The cheek looks pretty clean.

I was thinking 65, the face is extremely clean in-hand, maybe it's the perfect cheek that got me.

either way, even if it goes 65 it's probably not worth the net-effort.

I wouldn't- it looks like an average 64....

  • A 63 max IMO. Scuff on cheek, chatter in right obverse field and two hits right of arrows would keep it from going any higher. I would strongly advise you to save your slabbing fees---unless it is some exotic VAM (about which subject I am woefully ignorant.)

  • Should go 64, shot 65.

64/65 liner. Cheek looks clean enough, but chatter on right obverse field may hold it back from a 65.

That is a strong 64 in my opinion, I doubt it would make a 65, PCGS is really tough. I would not slab it unless you need a coin to fill an order. Looks good, though.

63/64. I think it could get a 64. Definitely not a 65, but if they were conservative, they would put a 63 on that coin.

    64.

Slab it if you plan on selling it later on.

  • I disagree with what a lot of people are saying.

This coin is the market standard for an MS65. Personally, I believe it will 65 any day of the week, and I am willing to bet on that.

It could go 65 as it looks nice even in big images, with noting particularly distracting from the overall appeal. It is common and inexpensive as you noted. I am not for slabbing anything worth under $300, but have done a few as last minute additions to a submission. Keep it naked. Nice, raw coins are worth having around.

Add me to the 65 crowd
    When in doubt, don't.

    I'm with the 65 crowd.

As far as slabbing, if you want to protect the coin or have a few that you want to submit then yes.

Otherwise be careful to store and handle it properly.

Because the strong reverse shows only light marks (from the pic anyway) this should go 65, unless there is something we aren't seeing...and this holds true for many of the 65 Morgans in slabs you see these days, from most of the TPGs

Nice looking coin. I see no problem with it grading 65. Strike is good, contact marks non distracting, clean cheek with creamy luster.

  • MS65 in my Book but I would keep it RAW...!
