Coin collectors/dealers are not the rowdiest bunch, but why did Stack's schedule lot viewing for New

In the new issue of Dave's Notes, he mentions the following:

"You are invited to participate in lot viewing for our Orlando Sale which begins at the Renaissance Orlando Resort at Sea World, 6677 Sea Harbor Drive, on Sunday, December 31st at 11 a.m., continuing on New Year’s Day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Our Orlando Sale event will take place on Tuesday, the 2nd, leading off 2007 for the numismatic hobby. The catalogue is now being prepared—and how impressive it is!"

Other than getting frenzied after hearing about the upcoming catalog, I got to wondering-- who will actually be at lot viewing at 10 AM on New Year's Day? Which Stack's staffer draws the short straw and has to be there at 10 AM to unlock the door?

They didn't ask me, but given the sale is on the 2nd, it makes sense.

Business is business. NYE is a little silly. It marks nothing more than our current calendar page flip which was offset 13 days anyway in 1752 (for some nations) in the Gregorian/Julian transition. Makes more sense to make sound purchase decisions than nurse a hangover from celebrating something of no particular significance.

Yeah, it gives you a chance to go to church at 8 AM, have breakfast and start at 10.
    What's the problem???????

There have been more than a few complaints from potential bidders, but scheduling the sale on the 2nd is a necessity because the FUN show begins for dealers on January 3, 2007. I'm not totally sure, but I believe Superior Galleries is conducting their sale at night on the same day.

At least nobody scheduled an evening session on December 31, 2006.

  • If I lived down there or was going to the show I probably would go to the lot viewing at 10 AM.

Somehow I think we all suspected that you weren't a party person.

Being the cynic that I am, I think they must have a bunch of ugly, expensive raw coins in that auction; hence the scheduling of the lot viewing. BTW, will they be serving alcohol at the same time lot viewing is taking place?

New Years Day is COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAY.

Since you're a Buckeye alum so you have reason to watch college football. My alma mater just fired their head coach today after going 1-11 this season.

This is just my personal preference, but I do not like watching college football or any collegiate sport. It seems to me that most of the time in NCAA football teams score not because of skill or good offense, but score because of opponents' errors or because of bad defense.

Pretty much a worthless throwaway day then I guess.
