A pair of Battle Creek Morgans to drool over...

Although my collecting interests are focusing more on Seated and Bust coins with pleasant originality, I will ALWAYS love these BC Morgans. I have one with Emerald greens and cranberry reds that just melts the eyes with beauty.
Here is an incredible pair of BC Morgans that define the term "eye appeal" for those who relish the beautiful toners.

Dizzy: I owned that set -- in fact, I'm sure you saw it at my table at a past Santa Clara show. I put away two virtually identical (colorwise) sets for myself and subsequently sold the set pictured in this thread several months ago and apparently it resold again. As cool as this set is, the one I'm still holding is even better! As I said, the incredible color is virtually the same but BOTH coins in my remaining set grade MS65* and are technically superior. In either instance though, both sets are absolutely amazing.

Yeah it's the coins that are tweaked.

Ouch! ...under the belt, and the ref takes a point away.
I had to put on my shades...
Given that approximately half the BC's were obverse toned and half reverse toned you can make some quite nice matched pairs. Mikey's is awesome, here is a date pair of mine that was in a previous thread:

Lloyd, did you sell them to Island? Or is he selling them for you? Or did you sell them to someone else and he is selling them for that person?

Steve,
<< <i>These BC Morgans sure seem to play ownership musical chairs.

Some perhaps, but not mine.
Mine went from Larry Shepherd to Lloyd (bestclser1) to me. And the 'music' has stopped playing because mine isn't going anywhere.
edited to add: if you notice, he also includes the ngc holder, so you can see how the color compares to the brown border on their holder. Very above board if you ask me, so I would trust the photos.
<< <i>I try to respect everyone's tastes here, but how can anyone possibily believe those are a natural occurance? They look like they were toned yesterday! >>

From the original owner through Superior to Larry to Lloyd to you. Not many changes. After all, they've been around for months now.

Months??? That eludes to a couple to three months. How about a year and a half. And to go from a dealer to a collector to another collector in a year and a half, certainly is NOT "musical chairs" IMHO.

Actually Russ, while there was one person who bought many of the best BC's who sold his coins due to financial issues, and another person who currently has many of the best who has sold some of his, just one level "below the best", BC coins (to make room for other coins), the absolute best BC's (roughly about 30 coins) currently are in very strong hands. They aren't going anywhere. Then you have the mid-range BC stuff which is still being absorbed into the market (roughly 300 coins, I just bought one at the Santa Clara show and will post it tomorrow). From what I've seen there is some shuffling going on among this group. Then you have the lower midrange coins, about 500, and the BC by NGC's grace only coins, roughly 550-600. Most of the BC musical chairs you see is going on in these last two categories.

Now I know with certainty the toning is legit. If this nitwit thinks it's bogus, it must be real.

Words of wisdom. Well spoken Sy and thanks for making things clearer for everyone.
The BC Morgans are special, period. Some can be acquired for very modest prices and some it takes a second mortgage. Whatever one's buying capability, they should be proud to own one of these very special treasures.
<< <i>The BC Morgans are special, period. >>
Some of them are special. Most are nothing more than common coins in common grades with common color that have been hyped to hell and back.

Perhaps, but they carry the Battle Creek pedigree. And as much publicity as the BC pedigree has received (good or not-so good) it will always be known and appreciated and will only grow in stature over time. ...to quote stman, "JMWO"

That pretty much sum it up. Buy the coin, not the pedigree.

As the original owner of the set in question I can tell you that Gary's images accurately depict the color when the coins are viewed in hand. The images are not tweaked -- the coins really look like that.

Doesn't surprise me one bit. I bought this Bust Half from Gary, here are his images. If anything, the actual coin looks even more impressive, although his images are excellent.

<< <i>Seriously Dizzy, what is the Battle Creek pedigree? There is so much unknown about the source not too many un-Pedigree Koolaid drinkers put much worth in it. For every two believers there is one non-believer. Therefore with this pedigree in particular it is much safer to buy the coin, not the pedigree. Now with Clapp, Eliasberg, or Duke's Creek we are talking different animals. >>
Fats, to compare one pedigree against another is apples and oranges. I think this BC pedigree in and of itself is solid, bonified, and very special, but sure, at the same time and in some ways, mystical. I'm not a Morgan collector, but there are MANY out there as I'm sure you know. There are also many Morgans out there to choose from. For my buck, I'll take a BC Morgan over a non-pedigreed Morgan if I like the coin and I feel the price is palatable. I only own one BC, paid a premium, glad I did, love the coin, and very much appreciate the pedigree.

So I take it I can count you as one of the non-believers.

Dizzy, you're the type of guy that most coin dealers can only dream about. Here is what I think of when I hear Battle Creek:
Fugly BC Morgan
You obviously have a bit of discretionary moola. How about this: You and I buy the coin I posted above (unless some moron board member decides to shill it, we'd have to agree on a max bid amount). I will pay for it to be sent it to a board member we agree upon to have it cracked and submitted to NGC raw. If it comes back with a *, you get the coin, and I never post again. If it doesn't, I keep the coin, and YOU never post again.
What do you think?
