Rush Limbaugh show and new dollar

The guest host today was slamming the new bulky presidential coins..."and when will the gov't learn." He cited the demise of the Sacagawea, SBA. Interesting. A lot of people listen so apathy for this new coin is already spreading.

<< <i>I think Rush said the dollar coins will be a failure. Do you think they'll be successful? >>
Define "successful". >>
I was just at my local bank and I asked the teller if they had any $1 coins. He had some Sacs and SBAs but told me people refuse to take them when he attempts to give them as change. To me, one useful definition of successful in this scenario is when the average person won't refuse the coins.

The public does not seem to want a dollar coin. I do not believe a dollar coin will be accepted until the dollar bill is eliminated.
Working with that assumption, it seems to me the new dollar coins are merely another commerative coin to be sold to collectors rather than to actually circulate.
Bulky?
I can't help but get the feeling that many people are opposed to a dollar coin without ever having tried to use one. I just don't see what the fuss is. I use them ona daily basis and find them quite convenient.

I hate that. It nails me every time I try to use the name of the guy who owned the Eliasberg 1804 dolar before Eliasberg. It is "At water", with the two words merged together. At least they don't ban my name as vulgar....yet.

Well?
Apropos of the coin posse/aka caca: "The longer he spoke of his honor, the tighter I held to my purse."
Personally, I would support the use of dollar coins and use them myself. I do not go to the establishments where dollar bills are preferred, but I imagine our friend Derek is having a fit about this.

<< <i>How long do you think it will be before these get to the local post offices? I usually go to the post office at least monthly to pick up dollar coins (from the stamp vending machine). I'd like to get a first-hand look at the new ones before I pass judgment. >>
They're supposed to be released on or about Washington's Birthday in 2007. Probably around March would be a good time to find them, but if you can't find one, PM then and I'll send you one.

Of course they are also phasing out the vending machines in the Post Offices (Planning to have them all gone within three years.) so how long you will be able to get them that way will be limited.
<< <i>So, the thread's still here because people are blasting him. OK, now I get it. To get it pulled, you have to praise him.
OK, he's fond of saying that behind every double standard
There is no double standard. This thread is walking a thin line but the coin posts are still winning, slightly.

But you're right about the plastic. I almost never use coins or currency anymore. Everything goes on the credit card (which I pay in full every month).

I used the euro all the time last Christmas. I traveled throughout Europe from 1997-2000 for work and used all the local coins much like the Loonie and Twoonie in Canada. It's a matter of getting use to it...but then again I get a roll of Sacs every week and hand them out for tips.

They still do, here in Illinois! City, county and state workers get the day off. Everybody else works.

Admittedly, Christmas Day is on a Monday, but New Years's Day was on a Sunday.
Dollar coins have almost never been popular through out American history. The last dollar coin that worked to any extent was the gold dollar prior to the Civil War. During that time from 1849 to 1861 people used the gold dollar because it was the most reliable form the the denomination. Silver dollars were too heavy to carry and had more silver in them than their face value. Paper dollars were issued only by private banks and had doubtful values that were tied to the financial health of the bank that issued them. Gold dollars were reliable.
The outbreak of the Civil War resulted in the hoarding of almost all gold and silver coinage. That ended the positive run for the gold dollar and the dollar coin.

For the calendar year 2006, Christmas eve and New Years eve fall on Sunday. Christmas Day 2006 falls on Monday. But New Years Day 2006 was on Sunday Jan 1st.

You are right, people who claim they wouldn't want to carry around that extra change have never really had to. Having travelled to many parts of the world in my naval career, I've had to carry a lot of "extra" change. It wasn't that annoying. If you've ever been to Hong Kong, Australia, or Singapore to name a few, you would really know what it is to have a real pocket full of change. In Australia, there were 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 cent coins as well as 1 and I believe 2 dollar coins. All were commonly used. Imagine that.
All the countires that used the dollar system did away with small denomination cash years ago in favor of coins. The question that should have been asked on the show is why weren't SBA's and Sac's accepted? It's because people had a choice. Had the 1 dollar bill been removed from circulation in 1979, We would have SBA registry sets now that would contain a lot more coins.

<< <i>Americans don't want to use a dollar coin, PERIOD. The trouble is carrying around 5 one dollar bills is a lot lighter than having to carry around 5 coins, even if they are the new smaller dollars. The government and some coin collectors want to shove these things down the public's throats. Most of us just don't want to use them. >>
I tend to agree with this slant. Even in the 1970`s with Ikes and Kennedys, my pockets would rip a hole. Just imagine now with prices as they are these days and with credit cards, it`s a harder sell to have a $1 coin. Maybe a Ike Dollar size $5 coin might go over.
tj sorta looks 1980ish huh.
