Old Holders

Hi,

Hope all had a nice Thanksgiving. I took a two year sabbatical from coins, but I'm back and having fun again.

I have a few questions about the PCGS OGH's. I mostly collect Morgans. Anyone have any idea what percentage
of them will move up? I have a lot of 63's and 64's which look undergraded to me. Am I better off cracking them
out or sending them in the original slab? I also live very close to Newport Beach. Can I drop them off instead
of shipping them?

Thanks

Bruce

It's my understanding that the rumor of the undergraded OGH's has been around for so long that most that are upgradable have been submitted and regraded already, leaving most that are still out there either acurately graded or overgraded.

That being said I'm sure there are some great coins out there still to be found in OGH's, just not nearly as many as their used to be.

Bottom line is your grading opinion. If you think they deserve an upgrade then go for it.

As far as cracking or leaving in the plastic to submit, I have no idea. Same about the drop off thing, no clue.

If they have never been picked over, there's a reasonable chance a number of them could upgrade. A lot depends on who put them away to begin with and how good there eye was. If this was you, then you know the answers. There's not a huge spread between the 63's and 64's. If some of those 64's could be upgraded to 65 it's a worthwhile gamble. I'd have someone go through them with you just to recalibrate yourself. Pick out the very best pieces and send them in the old holders. You may want to wait until the spread between the 64's and 65's widens again. Right now it's only about $70K and a big chunk of that can be taken up by the regrade fee.

Bingo. There are plenty of upgradeable common Morgans in 63 and 4 still around, because it doesn't pay to do it. There are lots of upgradeable things in those holders in issues without a huge spread. It can still be a nice way to get a great coin for the price, although most of the big scores have been taken already. See what $20 can get you in a BTW commem in a 64 rattler holder. You'll never get rich that way, but it's reason enough to smile.

Agreed. There is no "magic" about older holders. Most of the upgradeable have been done. Still, upgrade room exiss for older collection PQ pieces. Don't believe the hype, but keep your eye on the coin and not the holder.

If the coins were kept off the market from the time they were graded by PCGS until now, they have a shot at an upgrade.

My understanding is that Yes, you can drop them off instead of shipping.

The pickins are getting very slim to non-existant especially when looking around on the bourse floor, however, once in a while I get a potential upgrade from an older collection privately that has been off the market for a number of years. Unless its significant $ value, I usually just try an get a premium for the coin in leu of submitting. About a month ago, I had a Common date Au-58 SLQ that would regrade into a 62 holder, and I just sold it as is for a little premium. Just yesterday , I picked a very nice Old two piece ms-64 1913 TYII Buffalo that should upgrade to 65. I just listed it on e-bay and hope that a premium is paid for the coin and let the buyer make a few bucks. I would have sent his one in as the difference is about 200.00, but I didnt have 4 coins to submit with it.

You get some upgrades if you pick the very best pieces that appear to be ripe for a retry.

BUT don't waste your time and money on dates like 1881-S that are very common in high grade and on dates that have a big bump in price if they get the next grade UNLESS it looks like a slam dunk. The grading services often seem to gloss over common dates, and not spend the time to grade them well. Therefore they can be a crap shoot, and even if you get the higher grade, the rewards are not that grade given the risk. (e.g. an MS-64 is worth $45, and MS-65 is worth $125.) As for "big bump in price coins" the services are aware of those price changes too, and often get conservative when it comes to those dates. Therefore will see some darn nice looking MS-63s for the dates when the price jumps from $200 in MS-63 to $1,100 in MS-64.

The best chance for upgrades, I think, is in CC dollars. I've seen some really disappointing coins in MS-64 and 65 holders. BUT remember that the smart buyers see that too, so don't expect to get all the money for an overgraded certified coin.

No, each coin has to be individually reviewed.

I have a lot of 63's and 64's which look undergraded to me. Am I better off cracking them
out or sending them in the original slab?

Most people have had better luck cracking them out.

I also live very close to Newport Beach. Can I drop them off instead
    of shipping them?

I believe they have certain days (Thursdays perhaps) when you can drop them off in person. (Try calling Tele: (800) 447-8848 or (949) 833-0600)
