I have never seen this view of Stone Mountain before (nice pic on Anaconda's site)

Check out this really nice picutre of the Stone Mountain Memorial on the Anaconda site. To keep this numismatically related, there is also a pic of the Stone Mountain coin in the link:

Stone Mountan is just a few minutes away from me, it's a nice park and a very fun hike to the summit.

The coolest way to view Stone Mountain, though, is from the summit of Kennesaw Mountain. image

Nice writeup and details on his site! My wife and I took the cable car up it ten years ago when I was stationed in Georgia. Very impressive carving and the view at the top was great. BTW, for you train fans, there's also a train ride at the base of the mountain. Also very nice.

    Happy Thanksgiving to All!

Great place to visit with the family if you're ever in Atlanta. They do a laser show just after dark that's pretty interesting, and as Amanda points out, the hike to the top is a good way to get some exercise (the last 1/4 mile is tough!)...Mike

Read the QDB Commemorative Encyclopedia. Just for the history lesson, the book is worth the price!

Stone Mountain is a neat place. Ever hear the bells going? I dated a girl from Lithonia for a while and she pointed out some of the little things like that.
  • Cooper (see sigline) and I hike around the mountain and lakes 3-4 times a week. If you see a dog in that pond it is probably Cooper. The carving is largest high relief carving in the world. Covers over three acres. For a point of reference, the elevation from the reflection pond to the summit is approximately 900 feet.

Contrary to what the article infers, Borglum was fired and never returned in the 1930s. All work on his design, which is the one on the coin was blasted off the mountain and work was started from scratch. Joining Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson on the Monument is Jefferson Davis, President of CSA.

Here is a pic of the carving

just added a Stone Mtn Commem as a pocket piece. Got the coin for helping the proverbial old lady sort through her late-husband's coin collection. Maybe an XF? She ended up donating most of the collection to a local coin club's YN program.

you don't realize how BIG this thing is until you've seen a grown man standing inside one of the horse's mouths, and him to not be able to reach the top of the mouth......they were cleaning it, if you were thinking, "why would a man stand in the horse's mouth on the side of a mountian?".....so there.

I've been there several times and it's worth the visit. I live about 2 1/2 hours SE from it,
