Kraft Envelopes?

I heard a comment made on another coin site that "if you put the coin in a Kraft Envelope it will look nicer in about a year."

I'm assuming these "Kraft" envelopes enable some type of toning to occur? Has anyone else heard of these Kraft envelopes?

In the old days this was the way many collectors stored their coins. The envelopes had a high sulfur content that could sometimes impart nice colors. I don't think modern envelopes have the same sulfur content.

Got a whole box of 'em from an old estate a couple years ago. Almost forgot about 'em. They're manila colored 2"x2" envelopes with a sealing flap.

  • Kraft paper is a light brown very cheap high sulphur paper.
I get it in rolls about a foot in diameter and 2 feet long, and use the paper for wrapping finished machined parts in.
Envelopes are made from this paper in various sizes, and as coindeuse notes, the smaller ones were used to put coins in years ago. The sulpher tones coins, and on silver will turn the coins dark black within a short while. It destroys coins.

In the late 1880's paper mills set up and used sulfides to disolve ground-up wood chips. These sulfides made the mills reek of rotten eggs and were not a very popular place to be around. During WWII most of the sulfer was diverted to rubber industry in the making of tires, so the mills went to a modified-sulfide chemical process which has been refined over the years. Due to EPA and governmental policies, the refining processes have removed the majority of harmful chemicals, but some still remain in low levels.

It's those really old yellow Kraft envelopes that will in a few decades, ripen a coin into a toned beauty or beast.

Would someone please post a "Kraft Envelope" toned coin?

This coin was a sort of gold color with lots of PVC residue. After a bath in acetone, and a rinse, the coin toned like this after about a year inside a kraft envelope. It toned thus mainly because the acetone bath removed the film that seems to form on coins over time, allowing them to react with the envelope. I have had bright white coins refuse to tone until bathed in acetone. TomB could explain the cause and effect here.

I have a bunch of the old (dark brown) kraft envelopes. I wonder if the sulfur is still active?

Hey, does anyone else believe the new icon is very befitting to Russ?

Are we all eventually going to have to have disclaimers as such?

Ever hear of "tongue-in-cheek? Russ and I haven't been in litigation, yet.

I cropped this from a post about ACG, where disclaimers are absolutely necessary IMO!
