It's time PCGS stopped body-bagging and started giving "details" grades.

The grading service with the best reputation should not tarnish it by encapsulating problem coins---Period! The only "details" coins I will accept are at least R4, and then only if I think I will never find a better one.

I believe one of the reasons many people consider ANACS a lesser grading service, is that they encapsulate huge numbers of problem coins. On 11/3/06 I did a search for Bust Half Dollars on Heritage web site. I was amazed to see 232 ANACS coins out of 271 total. The sad part is that nearly all the ANACS coins were "details" coins.image NGC was wise to not use their company name or label on problem coins, instead they use NCI with a totally different looking label.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

    << <i>They make Yugo's anymore???.

Actually, they do, but not they are no longer imported into the US. I was in Macedonia last summer and saw quite a few there. A few were even moving image

Ziggy - Depending on the model, the guts may be the same or they may be different. I looked at the Toyota Highlander and its cousin, the Lexus RX330, last year. In this case the guts are the same. The body is more rounded and there are a few more cup holders, etc. inside. I didn't think it was worth the extra $5K, so I bought a Highlander. I don't feel the need to impress anyone. Maybe that's why I'm not a Registry guy, either. >>

Do the headlamps on your Highlander track with the steering?

I do love the Lexus/ Toyota analogy - basically the same coin in different holders. I believe that the bottom line for PCGS is the brand placement. Holdering problem coins would dilute the brand.

If there were an upside to PCGS to do it, they would do so in a heartbeat. Ergo, must have been analyzed to have no upside. Pretty simple, really.

No, at least not last year's model. I didn't know the Lexus did that either, so maybe it's new. Is that worth $5K?

I haven't made the effort to read all the posts in this thread, but I just got an e-mail from PCGS asking if they should grade Problem Coins! I don't know if they'd act on it, but it seems like they're curious as to what we think.
