Coin collecting software

I'd like to hear comments from anyone that owns specific coin collecting software, good or bad. What it does well, and what it doesn't. What are the advantages of such software over keeping inventory using a regular spreadsheet program?

Comments

  • I'm using Coin Manage by Liberty Street software.............and it sux !!!!!

the only reason I'm still using it is because I have way too much data to start over again with other software. though one of these days I'll bite the big one and buy something else.

Twice I've bought updates and both times the data did not transfer properly.

LIBERTY STREET SOFTWARE SUX!!!! now mind you that is only my opinion.

  • I actually use coin manage 2006 and have used it since version 2004 and I kinda like it myself, I have never had a problem updating mine at all, and I like the fact you can put your own pictures with the coin and the 2006 has a feature where you can just click on it and go to ebay to search for the specific coin you are looking at (which even though not a necessary feature is a coolfeature they added with the last version). I have tried others as well but I like this one much better than any other I have tried

I'm glad it's working out for you...................after reentering my data 2 times and I still find data that didn't transfer properly,

I give up.........I do like the software but I'm sticking with the 2001 version, no more updates for me.

Did I mention...........LIBERTY STREET SOFTWARE SUX???

  • I use Coin Manage by Liberty Street as well. I think it is the best out of all the other software choices out there.

All of the other ones I have tried have been either difficult to enter data or to see data.

I find that Coin Manage has the best entry system and it allows the easiest format to view data.
  • OK, the lines are drawn on Liberty Street software!! Quite frankly, I've had it with troublesome software, which is what you usually get in niche software. What does this stuff do that a spreadsheet won't? Not only that, you can use a spreadsheet for TONS of other stuff that this probably wouldn't.

Coin Elite, Trove Software. Cheers, RickO
  • I have coin manage as well but as a data base type program it generates rotten reports. I like the interface and it's pretty easy to add things that don't quite fit in the provided categories, and again, I've never generated a decent report with it.

I have File Maker Pro which is a data base program and one day I'll sit down and transfer everything to it. That will rock.

I use NumisExpert. Free trial versions are available. Search the internet for it.

I have, and use daily, what I consider to be the very best coin software available. Unfortunately, it is a custom software application, and is not available for sale. It is a relational database, based upon the MicroSoft Access relational database platform, but it has been highly customized for my specific application. A database is significantly more powerful and adaptable that a spreadsheet, and allows me to instantly search any of the data tables in any desired manner to find the desired information. I cannot claim to have developed this myself, but combined my own knowledge of numismatics with my brother's knowledge of data bases, to acheive the desired results. It is a work in progress, and is constantly being refined to achieve the desired results, but I can honestly state that it remains the single most problem-free software application that I have ever used, and has outlasted three computers on which it has been used.

I carry a laptop with the coin database to coin shows, and it instantly allows me to bring up attribution forms to identify a coin I am considering. Once identified, it allows me to instantly search my collection for other possible examples of the same die marriage. I can review each coin in my reference collection for comparison, allowing me to make an instant decision on a possible purchase. I can bring up a list of all purchases from a particular dealer, all purchases within a specific time frame, all examples of a specific date or die marriage, and will even print out up to the minute 'want lists' of coins that I am seeking. When the JRCS or LSCC conduct census surveys of member holdings, by date, die marriage, and grade, I can print out my report with just one button, with a complete census of what I own. I am currently working to attach digital images of all of my half dimes, so that each coin in my collection can be viewed while at a show, allowing comparison with a potential purchase or upgrade. With nearly 2000 half dimes in my reference collection, I find I could not function without such a database, and would be lost without it.

I also use Coin Manage 2006. Herb is right. LIBERTY STREET SOFTWARE SUX!!!!

I has data for US and GB coins. You must enter all other countries by hand.
I've been working for 2 months trying to get all of my coins entered properly.
I've found a couple bugs in it, but have also found work-arounds for them.
I tried to get a refund for the product, but they wouldn't return my emails or calls.
They are based out of Canada, so I don't know if they have something like the BBB
in the Great White North, but these folks should at least run their business honestly.

    Mr. HalfDime,

Sounds like you've got a product that's about ready for market.
Do you own the rights to the source code or does it belong to your company?

Oh, yes, there are other software packages, but they are more costly and
    some require annual updates.

Ditto (just in case the point hasn't already been made) image CoinManage has a lot of great features but the 2006 version is very flakey. This would be the best if they didn't only
go 80% of the way. I had some e-mail exchanges with their tech but he was only mildly interested in fixing the problems & never did. The 2003 version was more stable.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

Coin Elite. It does what all the other coin programs do but you can't surf eBay with it. It's got all kinds of print report options I don't even know what in the L ½ of them do.
I think all the inventory programs are just like any other spreadsheet, only you don't have to right scroll 3 miles across your screen to see all the data fields.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • Sounds like Excel is the way to go unless you can write your own. At least you can use spreadsheets for tons of other stuff, I would think coin software would only work well with coins.
  • Do any of the above mentioned software packages allow the user to take advantage of PCGS and NGC barcodes?

I was using Coin Manage 2006 but finally gave up and just switched to using my own Excel Spreadsheet. I did like the "link" to ebay in the coin manage however.

And all of this would be perfect if the laptop never broke down at a big show! imageimage

Seriously, MrHalfDime, your package sounds like it should be marketable, as it seems to have met with interest here. Have you and your brother considered marketing it?

For me, I'm using Excel worksheets, but revaluing everything when prices change is an issue, as is determining prices for rare varieties and errors for which valuations aren't listed anywhere.

For some things I use Excel. For others, and for showcasing pictures, I've written a number of web pages and scripts. The advantage to an online solution of some sort is that you can access it from any computer anywhere; it doesn't have to be *your* computer...

While it's the most widely distributed, I didn't much care for it when I played with the demo. I, like MrHalfDime, prefer a home-rolled Access database to anything else, customized to my needs. Those uncomfortable programming an Access DB would be best off with Excel.
