    <<Are Coins To Expensive ?>>

Considering your average car lasts 10 years and a coins life is indefinate no, the secret is only spend what you can afford!
  • I took a look at several different asset classes to determine returns since 1994 and 1999. Here is what I found
Asset Class Since 1994 Since 1999
    S&P500 200% 12%
    MSCI World 269% 23%
    MSCI Emerging Markets 102% 230%
    Home Prices in US,UK, & Australia 120% 77%
    1909-S VDB PCGS 66 Red 333% 225%
    1796 No Stars $2 1/2 PCGS AU58 ? 60%
    1879 Flowing Hair $4 Proof PCGS 66 ? 175%

So based on this data, coins (as measured by the VDB penny) have performed a bit better than stocks and 2-3 times as well as housing prices since 1994 and significantly better than housing prices and stocks (except Emerging Markets) over the past seven years.

Based on these measurements, it would seem that coin prices are extended in valuation relative to other important asset classes

Supply and demand is fine, as long as people have access to relevant information and you have an active market. Numismatics has a very thin market, and as such, is easily susceptible to market manipulation. How many times in the last five years have you seen rapid jumps in specific areas of the market? In a several month period, I saw Bust $s in AU double in price. Ditto re MS 66 Liberty Nickels. Pops of these coins are relatively low, and if a few people get together and buy a bunch of them....well, you can connect the dots.
