Post Your Circulation Finds
Hi
Today in change at lunch I received a 1944 (P) Quatter in G-4. In the past week I have received two wheaties at Wendy's (two different visits). I have also received a pre 1965 dime in the last week. I do not remember where I received it, however, I did notice it and asked the cashier for another dollars worth of dimes, and had no luck with those. This has been quite an unusual week for circulation finds.
I thought it would be interesting to start this thread where people could post interesting circulation finds including the results of roll searching.

My wife found this in her change at McDonalds. She came home and laughed at me for looking so hard, when they just handed it to her.
At least I have her trained enough to look at her chnage.
LOL
If you do not use coins and currency for commerce you are missing out on a chance to obtain some great finds. Frankly I get just as excited about a good or great circulation find as coins I have purchased.

I'm really lazy and the check card is so much easier now that it's accepted virtually everywhere.
Coin dealer Steve Bryan admits it's a publicity stunt that could raise interest in his shop. He says he put a rare penny into circulation and wants to hear from the person who finds it -- even if the finder doesn't want to sell it back to him. The coin is a 1914-D Lincoln penny worth $500 dollars.
Bryan says he spent it somewhere in Dover Monday. Bryan is the same dealer who garnered national attention this year when he bought some $100 dollar bills with missing serial numbers from people who got them at an area slot machine parlor. Bryan contacted federal agents about the bills, resulting in the conviction of a Treasury worker who stole them from a printing office.
Edited to add: No, I didn't find it. Just to let you know what's out there.

In the last couple of years I found a 1941 Wheatie in VF20, a 1962-D quarter in AU50, and a late '40's Roosie (can't remember the date/mm as after a few months I put it back in circulation) in ~EF40.

This past couple weeks, I search 120 rolls of pennies for copper keepers: 18.2 % were 1981 or earlier (1093 coppers out of 6000 pennies).
The 1982's: I sorted out 118 of these. Out of 94 1982's, only 9 were small date, and out of 24 1982D's only 3 were small date. Even though my location is not representative (see below), it still leads me to guess for now that maybe about 10% of 1982 pennies minted were small date variety? Unknown is the proportion of 1982 coppers to zincolns. Any guesses?
Out of those 6000 colorful coins, only 11 were wheaties.
It's been fun to hunt for the occasional 30 or 40 year old penny that has that golden patina almost like the unopened-proofs. Those 60's pennies are especially attractive. It's been a fun little treasure hunt with frequent little gems uncovered!
Started out interested in how much copper was being held in rolls here, since "here" is at an Army base in Korea where pennies don't circulate on base except at the US post office and the US branch banks. I thought the rolls gathering dust in the vaults might have had a better-than-average share of interesting cents! Anybody have any values for your neck-of-the-woods for comparison?
Just fun stuff for stats and for cool little coppers at face...

Last weekend my girlfriend gave me a giant jug where her ex kept his change. Nothing has been added since they divorced in1994. So far I've gone through about a dozen rolls (making rolls from the loose pennies in the jar). I've found three wheaties. I also dug out my old Whitman ablums and saw I hadn't added anything to them since 1982 (when I was 13) so I've been setting aside the better looking ones from the jar to go into the Whitman, plus replacing some from the album when I find ones that have luster. The project has taken me back to a much more simple time.
Some of the pennies have turned pretty whicked colors (both good and bad) in the Whitmans.

I have a 1938-1960 Jefferson Nickel set that I am trying to complete. The only rule is, every coin MUST be found in circulation. I started in mid January and only need a few more coins.....
My wife brought this to me when it came out of a nickel slot machine at casino. I guess it was intended to defraud slot machine (I thought weight was one of the factors for the identifier) and it worked...well, at least once. Now I have it. Very hard to photo because everything has been squashed flat, you can just make out Lincoln Memorial on the reverse, there is no visible date, however, 10x magnification reveals it's a 2001. The metal in the date area has be raised like some kind of die pressed it flat. Just another circulation find.

Great find. when I started this post I hoped that it could be an "all positive post" and I have seen a number of great kinds. Please feel free to keep posting your finds. I do have a question. When you get a find in a store, do you go back to the cashier and ask for change in the sum denomination as your find? For those that search rolls, does anyone search rolls of Sac's and SBA dollars and if so, what has been your experience.
Thanks
