<< <i>Actually a DH can bat for anyone in the lineup, not just the pitcher.
    >>

    (b) The Rule provides as follows: A hitter may be designated to bat for the starting pitcher and all subsequent pitchers in any game without otherwise affecting the status of the pitcher(s) in the game.

There's some complicated stuff about mid-game pinch-hitters, substitutions, etc. that sounds like it might be possible to end a game with the DH in the lineup and a subsequent pitcher having a spot in the batting order, but the starting pitcher MUST be the player replaced in the starting batting order by a DH, if a DH is used.

<< <i>At least Don Baylor actually won an MVP as a DH! >>

Yeah, that was a brutally bad pick, too. Fred Lynn was the best player in the AL that year by a wide margin; even leaving aside the Gold Glove he won that year, he was straight-up a better hitter than Baylor, as were half a dozen others. Sportswriters have some kind of man-crush on RBIs, and it has led to even worse MVP picks than Baylor.
This is for you @thisistheshow - Jim Rice was actually a pretty good player.
