Newbie Mexican Coin Collector from Mexico

Hi all, my name is Arturo and I am from Mexico, I am 17. I've like coins for a while but I decided to start collecting seriously. I collect mexican coins and US coins, but nothing to bif for the moment. My oldest mexican coins is an 8 reale coin from 1805. And most of my collection are silver coins from 50's-60's, I want to collect a peso coin from each year, my oldest is 1871. I am also collecting the $100 state coins, currently I am in the second edition.

So just posting to know fellow collectors, I expect you accept a newbie in your community and see what advice can you give me and get to know the ones who collect mexican coins

=)
Thanks
Arturo

I'm not a big Mexican collector but I dabble a little. Your English is impeccable.

  • Welcome, Arturo image I collect both US and Mexican coins. One of my favorite collecting areas is to obtain US and Mexican coins minted during a specific historic event--eg., Diez y Seis, Civil War, Mexican-American War, WWI, WWII, etc. I also am interested in Maximillian coinage, Iturbide, and the 1910-17 revolution.

  • Thank you very much for your replies. Does anyone here is from Arizona? I live near the US border. Does someone have pictures of their collections?
I would love to see serious collections from around here. Another question are the "caballitos pesos" expensive? I will need them for my collection, right now I am not very into grading and perfect condition, a normal coin, how much will it cost?

    Thanks

There was a Caballito peso on Ebay yesterday for about $40.00 US. It was a 1910 I believe and looked to be in XF or a little better.

Hey Arturo! Welcome to the forum!

If you're near Arizona and Tucson is in driving distance there is a coin show there this weekend. Here's more info.

  • Welcome to this board, Arturo. If you are really interested in being a numismatist, then you will soon learn that information is the key to successful collecting. You should immediately obtain any books on Mexican coinage so that you can learn about your desired coins. While I can't remember any specific titles, I am aware that there are some excellent references available for the Mexican series. Do a 'Google' or 'Ask.com' search on Mexican coinage references and you should turn up something. Also, IIRC, Mexico has an active national numismatic association which will be a great source for further information.
Again, welcome to this facinating and life-long hobby!!!

  • Hi Arturo !

Like many members on this board, we collect whatever interests us at the time image

I just completed a Mexico type set (65 coins) in AU/MS dating from 1905 - 1977. Quite an impressive looking set in the Dansco #7220 album.. The larger silver coins are Beautiful compared to the US coinage of that era..

    Welcome to the board !!

I completely agree with whohah, education is the key to avoiding frustration in numismatics. For mexican coins - there are quite a few great references. "Resplandores" for cap'n'rays, "Hooknecks" for the first profile eagle coins of 1823-1825, "Columnarios" for 1700's pillar dollars, etc.

First step is finding a direction. Second - learning as much as you can about it.
