POLL: Questions on lower grade ASE sets (68 or less)

My self,
I allways planed on sitting on my sets for 10 years or more. Unless some need came up. I sent my first 3 sets in to PCGS, first time submission. Seeing that a R, PR 70 DCAM GAE, could sell for more than twice the issue price of the whole set. I just had to give it a shot.

But the SAEs are not doing as well as the GAEs did, when it comes to grading. Or it doesn't look like it in any case.

So I want to ask a few questions

Even though I didn't vote, I vote, Forget about First Strike, and don't send your sets in at all.

I JUST DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE FIRST STRIKE THING. Two months ago this board was filled with people posting what a crock of hooey it was, how there was no such thing as First Strike, and when the US Mint posted on their site that there is no such thing as a First Strike Eagle (among other things) the board went wild with glee.

Now the whole board is going nuts trying to get a First Strike designation on the 20th Anniversary sets. I guess it's a rip off unless you can stand to make some money on it, then it's a viable designation.

To which I reply.................More power to them. If you can get the designation, make a couple bucks for your family, then by all means, this is Capitalism and I'm all for it. But, those same folks shouldn't complain about the Coin Vault and like minded sales pitches. But I'm not the boss, nor will I ever be the boss, so take it all with a grain of salt.

I think I'm in the minority but I don't see the need to get a coin fresh from the Mint, in pristine packaging, and pay money to have it repackaged in a holder which is less attractive, especially knowing somebody is going to put their mitts on it, and especially knowing the problem with milk spots on Silver Eagles. That being said I have a fully graded set of Uncirculated Eagles, because I think that's more viable than putting them in a Dansco where they'll probably tone. I don't like toned coins. Again, to each his or her own.

Do what works for you.

In 10 years we will be looking at the 30th Anniversary Set. Your set(s) should do well by then !

I voted to return them if possible. It may seem dishonest, but if you
are using the coins as an investment, then you should expect the mint to
issue worthwhile coins.

As much as I hate the "First Strike" designation the smart money
is to flip them for a profit quickly. Holding them for several years
will not guarantee the price that FS designations currently command.

Also, if the MS coins spot, as they are suspected to do, then what will
they be worth in a few years?

Of course this is my opinion only. I bought only one set of SAE's and
currently have submitted them for the FS/20th ANNIV. designations.
if they grades high, then I may flip them and buy another set if they are
still available, or keep them for myself.

I'm not a collector of the eagles, although I have some and think they
are nice coins.

My thinking is the silver set even raw will be worth ?? x the issue price in 10 + years. Graded sets may well be worth much more than raw, even in 68. Provided they haven't spoted. Having the "first Strike" may or may not add anything to the value. I would hope NOT, but who can say? I also like the mint package, And will NOT be sending in any more of my sets. I bought 1 for me, 4 for gifts, and 3 extras. The extras I intend to keep for me also, but may sell if I have a need to. If any of my first 3 come back less than 68. I'll crack them out. But only return them if they look bad to ME.
