Since I'm in a Turkey Red mode
here is scan I took from an auction house 2 years ago w/ the ultimate display piece.
This display unit would have hung in a general store or a tobacco shop 95 years ago
as a point of sale piece.
Ironically I know the winner of this piece and 1 day I hope to see it in person...jay

Jay- it's even more spectacular in person, and it's in very good company.

  • WOW! that ad display is really nice and worth bucks too!

live each day like it's your last but don't count on it!
  • Thank you for the storage advice. That is an amazing display piece. Thank you for posting the picture. Do you know the dimensions? It must be impressive to so in person.

DAVID - I have the write up and its quite lengthy but doesn't give the overall dimensions
just the individual pieces inside. It must be huge as the piece makes the large T3 cabinet card seem tiny.
It sold via Leland in 6/05 for $17, 715.61 w/ the buyers premium it went for $20,815.84

GRIFFINS - 1 day I'll be out on the coast to see you and this display...jay
  • The display is awesome!

Dave - Ah yeah; Niles; sorry I sold my other example..

This thread is becoming like the T3 tractor beam image

just in case of any misunderstanding, I do not own this piece, but am friends with the person that does.

  • Since this thread is focusing on the T3 set, I changed the title to remove the reference to the Goudey set.

Regarding the amazing display piece, is that a Helmar L1 coupon behind the L1? Does someone have a scan of the Helmar L1 and/or S81 coupon? I noticed that the L1 and S81 sets are listed as 1912. However, weren't they contemporaneous with the T3/T9 set?

I've got a coupon, but can't find the scan. Jay, do you have the scan of the Orval with the pack and coupon that I shot?
I thought the coupon gave you a choice of T3, L1 or S81. There are also some L1's that are considerably bigger than the standard size ones, but I'm pretty sure they weren't ballplayers. I've only seen Indians on those. I"m guessing they were about 35-40" high?

Do the non-sport leathers have the L1 designation? The Indian leather sounds impressive. Do you know if there are non-sport silks?

  • Based on eBay sales, you can pick up a PSA 1 common for around $125 - $200. The HOFs range from approximately $300 to $2,000+ in PSA 1. It really depends on the player. In PSA 2 grade, the HOFs range from approximately $600 - $5,500. The commons in PSA 2 are about double the PSA 1.

I do not follow the PSA 1/2/3 prices too much, so these prices may be a little off. However, they should be close.

ANTHONY - you never sent me a photo of the Orval/pack/voucher
you just sent me the card image
All the vouchers I have though, only offer Turkey Red choices
    not leather or silks...jay

I"ll check the ACC tonite. I think I've seen NS silks (women with parasols) but may be mistaken- perhaps it's just leathers. I'll check my notes this afternoon.
And I"ll post the coupon image as well.

  • Putting aside whether or not the expense is worth it; will PSA grade a T3 that has a small chunk missing out of the side of the border?
Is this a PSA 1; PSA Authentic, or ungradeable?
Any T3 experience with this one?

I think my McGraw has a big chunk missing, I"ll have to check. It's graded "authentic"

  • I think the upcoming sotheby's auction has a Cobb with a chunk missing that graded PSA 1.
  • I guess this addition to my collection officially qualifies me for "another cup of coffee" status. No better place to show one of these off then right here in a T3 Thread. I am really overwhelmed by the spectacular backround colors in this particular image. One of my favorites from that standpoint in the set.

RAY you are a buyin' machine
Good to have you back in the Turkey Red hunt.
You were building a nice little set 2 years ago.
Hope ya stick with it this round.

Here's one I got from you a year or so ago
don't worry its in good hands image ...jay

  • Jay,
Of anything I've ever sold I regret that sale the most.
Thankfully it's you; a friend who owns it.

I'm serious; if you ever upgrade that card please consider me first as a buyer.
    Thanks.

Danby, that is a gorgeous card. Way nicer than the PSA 1 grade would imply. I'm assuming the pinhole is what got it the 1?

    Tabe
  • magellanmagellan Posts: 2,099 ✭✭✭
Tabe, the pinholes will knock it down to a PSA 1. That's the great thing about T3s, the picture is utterly unaffected by the border holes, corner damage, etc.

  • tabe...yep, two pinholes top and bottom. Pinholes and back damage typically bring down the grade for T3's...but usually keep the overall aesthetic beauty of the card intact.
  • Just loaded about 40 scans on the registry

    Wow! The Cobb is KILLERRRRR!!
  • congrats on the cobb, ted. toughest card to acquire, in my opinion.
  • That Cobb is a knockout! Congratulations. What color. It must be hard to stop looking at it...if you have yet.
  • RipublicaninMassRipublicaninMass Posts: 10,051 ✭✭✭
Thanks guys. Danby as far as cost goes it is the toughest, but some of the others you just dont see around. I think I have seen at least one example of every card now, but for a while I hadnt even seen a few, especially the "no namers" of the day. Since people could choose which players they wanted, Cobb would most likely be the first choice.

Since I just picked this up, let's give this thread a well-deserved bump....

Minor paper loss on the back keeps it from getting a higher grade.

Hey Ted, good to hear from you - thanks on the Matty! That's awesome that you'll be even at 80% on such a tough set!
  • RipublicaninMassRipublicaninMass Posts: 10,051 ✭✭✭
I do have a few dups coming back, including 2 Matty's one with a 1-75 back and one with a 1-76 back, I am just learning how tough these 1-75 backs are. My Matty's are PSA 1's at best but I am just trying to get to 100% by all means necessary. Will I see you at the Show in a few weeks?
  • scooter729scooter729 Posts: 1,730 ✭✭✭
I'm sure I'll see you at the Shriners show - it's still the only show around here I'll go to regularly!

Here's the back of my T3 Matty with the paper loss that knocked it down to SGC 30. Not too bad, I think. And it is a 1-75 back as well!
