  • I hope you guys fair far better than i did last night with a vending box I opened last night. Just terrible, oh well at $9.95 per vending atleast it didn't hurt to bad! All in all its fun and I believe this set is very underrated for anyone that is looking for PSA 10's because just like the 71's or the 85 football these are going to be toughies to find in PSA 10's. Good luck to you guys on this rip and best of luck on pulling some 10's! looking forward to seeing scans.

  • If any of you get PSA 8 NQ quality #628 Kirk McCaskill (Angels), I would be interested in it! Last one I need for my team set.

Tired of buying team sets on eBay only have the one card I need off-centered or with bad corners. Dealers are too lazy to scan it for me (can't really blame them either).
Looking for Los Angeles/California/Anaheim Angels in PSA 8 or better

I just received my three '86 vending boxes from Mark Murphy today!

I'll wait to see if the other (7) participants receives their UPS Ground delivery, before I open.

I did peek at the inside one of my three vending boxes, to see that nice pattern the cards display,

...confirming these are "untouched virgin" boxes!

Untouched virgin boxes? image I'm just not going there!
  • Air Force One is on the ground.

Sorting will be followed by scans tonight. Good luck guys!

    Thanks again Bob!

  • Got mine also!

    The star search is on!

highlights from vending box one (of three). With two boxes to go, this looks pretty cool so far! I want to see some nice Ryans, Clemens' and some Roses from this case!

  • Bob, that Gooden looks super nice! image

As bad as the black borders are the centering on the All-Star cards and Record Breakers is damn near impossible. I'm through two boxes so far and I haven't gotten one of those with 8 centering.

I'll post scans after I sort through the third box. This is fun.

Sadly, UPS did not bring a package to me today.
The scans have been a help to ease my suffering.
Keep them coming so I can avoid going to ebay and spending $$$.

  • Mine are coming soon Charles. Hang in there image

  • Guys,

No scanner (yet) but box #1 yielded no Clemens, Ryan, Ripken or Mattingly cards but some Seaver, Gooden, Rose, Henderson, a really sweet Garvey, O. Smith, a couple Boggs, Gywnn's and the man of the year Bill Buckner!
  • WELCOME TO DINGED CORNER CITY
    POP. 3 VENDING BOXES

Wow. Obviously, I haven't gone through the commons (and don't plan to image) but out of all the star cards I got I couldn't find one that I would have graded. Either the centering was off, the black borders announced themselves with authority or the viscious vending corner chimed in. Still a lot of fun for relatively little money and I got three Clemens (I didn't get one in a rack box I cracked the other day).

Depending on how you look at it, these are either the highlights or the tragic disappointments of what could've been image

So ... what are we rippin' next? image Anybody want to do a rack case?

    Arthur
  • Arthur - I got the dinged corners and OC cards also.

I did get the rest of the stars in box #2 EXCEPT for Ryan. Hopefully box #3 will have him!

Isn't the 1986 Don Mattingly card just about perfect? It is, easily, my favorite card of the era. The hobby's hottest player with a great photograph from the set right in the middle of my collecting glory years.

    Just a great card.
  • Well I got one Ryan so maybe I can make a set, we will see. Got a few HOF'ers that might grade 9's but I doubt i will submit any of them. It was fun thanks again Bob.

  • Good news and bad news. The good news is that I received my 86 boxes today. The bad news is that the first box I opened has virtually all dinged corners. I went through about a third of the box and and have about 8 cards that might grade an 8 and two that might make a 9. I will report later when I have gone through the rest of the box.

Just wondering. I went through a vending case back in 86. Every single Dale Murphy card had a surface wrinkle in the same place. Anyone else find this?

Box 1 contained 37 HOFer cards counting AS cards and the Pete Rose Years cards.
Corners and centering varied throughout the box. A closer inspection later will see
if there are any potential 9s or 10s.

I will get a scan of some of the highlights ASAP.

Boxes 2 and 3 brought the HOFer total to 112.

Each box produced a Ryan and a Clemens.

I enjoyed the boxes and now have the task of organizing the cards into sets
and trading off the rest. Why do I do this to myself?

  • Box 1 results. The following stars had dinged corners: Ozzie Smith, Reggie Jackson, George Brett, Ryne Sandberg, Eddie Murphy, Tom Seaver, Tony Perez, and Kirby Puckett

The following had decent corners, but were off center: Wade Boggs, Mike Schmidt and Dwight Gooden.

I scan the others that were decent: Henderson, Gwynn and Rose

  • Here are some of the better cards from box 2 and 3. If most of these would grade 9 or better, then I would call this box bust very successful.

Yeah, there are tons of great cards in this set, and for 20+ bucks per person (for three vending boxes), you couldn't ask for a better mix of HOF (+ Rose, etc.) cards.

Too bad most cards had "a small corner ding". I guess this is the nature of vending material? I have to "echo" what packCollector said, "can't recall spending around twenty bucks, and having so much fun"!!!

edit: Well, maybe in my "hippie sixties", I had more fun with twenty bucks? I can't remember?image

  • If anyone puts a set together let me know what you need and I will check and see if I have it.

Nice, brings me back to the first year I was cracking packs as a boy. It's easy to see how there are so few 10's on some of these cards, even the pics of the best of the best are slightly OC or have the slightest touch along the black or to a corner. The red back along with the black seems like it must really makes those cards tough in 10's... looking forward to seeing the results once some have been graded.

Any expert information out there about the dark red backs vs the light red backs on the 1986 Topps? I know it is a color variation and the dark red backs give the darker blacks and other colors on the front. Is there anything else? Scarcity, anyone collecting both color variations, etc.? For anyone that does not know what I am talking about, here is a scan of a couple of sample cards.
