1999 Clad Proof Quarters toning in OGP

I pulled out a couple of sets to reminisce and noticed one set where the quarters, Delaware, Penn, NJ, Geo, and Conn are definitely toning. There is this nice brown hue ringing each rim obv & rev the Georgia rev is the most noticeable. Has anyone else seen this happening to these sets of proof clads?

BTW…none of my other 1999-2005 sets has turned, I would have expected the silver proofs to turn first.

Yup. Same for me. Only the 1999 Clad Proofs have toned. All other remained as white as when I got them. (Though they are all now in my Dansco Album).
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

I've had one clad set tone on me. It has sat in my constantly air conditioned office since the day I received it through the mail. The set was not toned when I received it because I go over my Proof sets very carefully when I receive them.

The only explanations are - the holder causes toning or more likely there was a residue of the solution that the mint uses to rinse the planchets before they are struck. Either way it’s darn aggravating when it happens. imageimage

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

The 1999 clad proof set is stored along with all my other proof sets in large fire safe with bags of dessicant...the tags on the bags have not turned pink yet indicating there has been an invasion of humidity. I was thinking...maybe the place I bought...nope came directly from mint...shrugging shoulders ~dunno ~

From what I can see, it appears that the foam insert in the proof sets made starting in 1999 seems to tone the coins. In a few years, they'll probably all be toned.

According to an article in CoinAGE a couple of months ago, this is a known problem with proof sets from that year and the silver sets are affected as well.
