That's just dried glue ... should be able to get that off.

That's what I thought too, as soon as I saw the pic.
Shouldn't take much to remove it.

looks petty nice otherwise. DOn't know if that's rub on the high point or photo technique. 63/58 RB?

I would agree. Conservation is fine to get rid of dreck on the coin, particularly stuff that will damage it if left unremoved. It's the conservation that changes the surfaces that I'm not that keen on.

Nice obvious woodgrain effect, too -- very common in early S-mint cents.

You reminded me of a funny story regarding another heartbreaker 1909-S Indian. I was out metal detecting in upstate NY one day, and I dug one up. Nearly died when I saw the dirt-covered "S" mintmark. Took it home and cleaned it up, but it was badly corroded - and the "S" crumbled and fell off! Not a counterfeit, just strategically corroded right on top of the mintmark. image

Edited to add- I would try soaking that coin in 1) rubbing alcohol; 2) acetone before I would send it to NCS. The crud might dissolve, and either one of those solvents is unlikely to strip away the color of the coin or otherwise harm its originality.

I'd opt for the acetone. If it's glue, the acetone will take it off in just a few seconds.

Different solvents and I would use both - one may get what the other misses.

That coin does not look UNC.
    Re-colored perhaps?

Possible, but I think it could be the lighting and/or the white balance.

I don't think its been recolored, looks like a lot 09's due to the metal mixture. But one can never be sure w/o seeing it in hand. And as far as unc., seen a lot of those 09's that are not struck sharply everywhere.
