    Looks like the Buffalo died from "death by 1000 cuts";

    Cool Coin, I'd say VF20

    Edit: It's hard to tell from the picture, but there is another diagnostic to use to ensure that its not a faked error. Are you sure its a real one?

  • Is the rear leg also weakly struck on all the 3 legged buffs? I dont know what to grade it.

    F-12 The horn tip is worn smooth as is the tip of the bisons tail...the rim is beginning to merge, but it's a nice circulated 3 legger none the less, desirable in any grade.

    Yes. More specifically, the rear leg is always seen as "moth eaten" due to the excessive die erosion.

    3-leggers are always tough to grade since even in mint state they look ragged and have poor luster. Based on the horn and the overall amount of wear, I'd grade it VF-25.

    I'd say VF20 was about right.

    vf-25, but that yellow color is definitely not natural!

    Commercial VF, that really only grades Fine or so because of the odd color and lack of eye appeal.

    I suspect the odd color is due to the red background. Some cameras try to compensate for highly saturated backgrounds which screw up the natural color of the coin in the image.

    But then again, it might just be goofy toning.

    I've seen Buffalo nickels with that toning. My guess is that's how the coin really looks.

    VF-20

    The color is probably because of the white-balance on the camera.

    Exactly. I suspect the coin's color would be very different if imaged with a blue background or a white background.

    Not bad for a 10 cent Buff.
    It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

    I see the grade, but would have guessed VF30, going strictly by how much horn is showing.
