Sending mint prducts for first strike desig. question

I understand that I must ship in originbal mint packaging. Does that mean in the unopened cardboard box or velvet box that the coins are placed in? So if sending this way you never actually get to see the coins until they are slabbed?

Unopened cardboard box, and yes you don't get to see them until they are slabbed. They did it that way so you couldn't potentially swap a "regular" proof that you already had for the one in the set going in for the first strike designation. If you open the cardboard box you can get the designation on the Unc and reverse proof but not the regular proof.

What about the date requirement for first strike... Is the 30 day limit for when the mint shipped to you, when you shipped to PCGS, or when PCGS receives your order. While none of the above have any revelance to strike order, I think the closest is when the mint shipped to you.

    Which does PCGS follow?

I believe that it is 30 days from the initial release date by the mint. In other words, if the coin (or set) is released on 10/1 and your coin or set arrives on 11/1, then you missed the boat.

When it arrives doen't matter, what matters is the postmark of when it was shipped. If they started shipping 10/1 and the postmark on yours is 11/1, you are out of luck. If the postmark is 10/29 and it doesn't arrive for some reason until say 11/25, as long as you don't open the box you can still get First Strike designation.

You don't, but it doesn't matter because First Strike has nothing to do with which coins were struck first.

Guess what, there are only 10,000 sets, they're all first struck!

Let's see ... First strike covers the first coins issued, but only way to spot them is via the postmark on a cardboard box. Without that, "first strike" can't be spotted.

That's why I list them in the Novelty Slab section and not as a Production Slab.

Conder, thanks for the succinct explanation I'm saving this thread for sure.
Anyone have the date of the first ASE shipment?

Here's the info worth saving :LINK

The Mint says that they will start shipping in October, but that is as specific as it gets. From the Mint web site:

"Shipping of the American Eagle Anniversary Coin Sets is expected to begin mid-October, 2006, and take 10 - 12 weeks to complete."
