I picked up a 2006 Topps Sterling Promotional Book off Ebay to hold us over till the real deal is releashed, last I heard it is 11/01/06. But whenever they come out you may want to get them early, cause we all know what happened with Topps Triple, I can't wait.

Thanks, Mike

More goofiness from Topps. Does anyone still collect Bonds?
  • digicatdigicat Posts: 8,551 ✭✭
If I can get his cards dirt cheap, sure.
    My Giants collection want list

WTB: 2001 Leaf Rookies & Stars Longevity: Ryan Jensen #/25
  • As of today, Topps has produced 1956 different Bonds cards, plates, or something with Topps logo on it that Beckett considers card related. 1956 different pictures of Barry Bonds, just this year!!!!!!!! That doesn’t even count the Sterling Set. Mickey Mantle has 726 cards this year.

Aesthetically the set looks cool but I dont know; I think the money could have been better spent by making them promotional/chase cards among their other sets.
  • What the heck is a "player-touched" autograph??

    << <i>What the heck is a "player-touched" autograph?? >>

I believe it's a signature directly on the card, as opposed to one of those wacky sticker autos...
  • I think they need to come up with a better description than that. ANY autograph is player touched (unless he has telekinetic powers or someone else is signing for him)!
I guess its all in the marketing. I dont think the 2001 Archives were advertised as player touched. Simply an autographed card.....
  • Gotta admit even though I am not a fan of GU cards, the bat barrel cards, especially the Gibson, are incredible.............

I agree that better wording can be used. But the concept is that the player actually touched the card - whereas most autograph issues in the last 3-4 years basically comprise of a player signing a sheet of 100 stickers that some card company junky then places on the card.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Good to see they chopped up a Josh Gibson bat. What are there, like 2 in the world? Also, I can think of maybe 300 players that should be in the set over Roger Maris- hmmm, maybe Hank Aaron? Willie Mays? Ty Cobb? Pete Rose? Jackie freakin Robinson?

Also, you can tell what player you're getting? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of opening a pack of cards?

"You wont know which player is featured on the four cards inside your Cherry Wood Box until you open the black outer Topps Sterling Box, but you will know who it is before removing the shrink wrap from the Cherry Box"

What ever happened to 10 cards for a nickel wrapped in cheap waxed paper with a slab of gum? 250.00 bucks a pack (on a 2006 product) takes all the fun out of busting packs....
  • $250 a pack !!?? Whoa, and I thought the $10 pack I sometimes get was alot.

    $240 for 6 1975 mini packs or a 2007 crapshoot??

Topps couldn't sell this garbage for 40 bucks a pack with a loaded rookie class back in 2004, why do they think they can
now for 5 times the price? This looks like all the stuff that you could pull in Leaf Limited back in 2004. Topps is just stealing
DLP's design and loaded it up with garbage. Bonds couldn't be further from a fan fav and yet they continue to paste his
pic all over everything. Mantle has been killed to death, and we all know that the Gibson "GU" are not even GU. That barrel
is from a game model bat!

Topps best card of the year came from a 4.99 pack of cards. It wasn't even a baseball player, and wasn't even a male for that
matter. Anyone dumping coin into this garbage just doesn't care about value. No topps product in the past has been worth more than
40 dollars a pack. I really don't get this. They keep putting less and less into Sterling, but charging more and more for it.

The kicker is that for 250 bucks you aren't even guarenteed ink!!!!

All I know is I'll be building the base set for less than the price of one pack. I am interested what the "hundreds" of cut sig subjects are, though.

Am I the only one who thinks some of their multiple GU cards look bad because they're too busy and the different colors make the letters and numbers look strange?

i might be one of the few here. but i might by a pack.. i think cards look good. resale value on ebay might break even.. even if you dont get a great pull.
  • I think this is a great step-up from Topps to enter the high-end market.

My only decision is whether to open up the outer packaging or not before flipping it.

I spoke to the Topps guy who had a lot to do with creating this. He was behind Triple Threads and you can see there are similarities.

There's a lot of high-hopes from Topps behind this product.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing. I don't have any use for all the rest of the nonsense (#'d auto cards, etc), but those base cards do look sweet.
  • Those inserts are very cool indeed. Should be alot of fun to see how this pans out. Some people have said they will buy singles so I'm curious as to how the value will change when they come out on the open market (ebay).
  • Mike, Thanks for the posts. Good luck with your open!!!. I enjoyed you threads about the triple threads and Epic. Thanks again for letting us live vicariously thru you.

I personally love taking a chance on opening this sort of pack. I picked up 2 boxes of 2004 UD Legendary Cuts 2 years and was lucky enough to get a Cy Young autograph, which I sold for $7,000.00. I know the chances of lightening striking twice is high, but figure I am playing with house $$. My 2 daughters(13 and 10) love ripping open packs when they get good grades in school. We are 1/3 the way thru a 2006 Legendary Cuts case, and will probably pick up 2 boxes later this year of the Sterling product.
  • In that Brett picture, look how high up on the bat he is putting that pine tar.

I assume this was before the "incident."
  • Singles are out now on Ebay, Good luck on your break. Here's the last two in the Sterling book.
    Thanks, Mike

id rather finish a vintage set then this stuff...
  • I may not end up buying more than a handful of the packs if I do at all but I really love that little promo book you have been sending the scans from. Great stuff Mikefromshester - I hope you post some scans after you open your packs.

As usual, they have pimped "limited".

I dont really get into shiny foil printed numbers that intimate rarity but I thought the Carew shots were nice.

    So,

I see not 1, but 3 different Carew's on Ebay (non-Jersey,bat etc). Probably more to come.

    All # to 250.

How can modern collectors not feel like there being played for fools by Topps and the rest.

    Nice cards but, No Thanks.

    Loves me some shiny!

This is the ugliest, most stupid Topps Sterling card that exists, methinks:

Ingenius to put a 15.00 card into a pack and turn it into a 150.00 limited cut (from a 250.00 pack no less)........

  • That is a terribly put-together auto card. Why not just have a redemption for the entire exhibit card or some such? These people have got to be laughing up their sleeves at the people paying so much per pack for that. Just awful. ]
